John Jancek was named co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Cincinnati in January 2010 after spending five seasons on the defensive staff at the University of Georgia.

Jancek was at Georgia from 2005-09, coaching linebackers before assuming the role of co-defensive coordinator in 2009. During his time at UGA, the Bulldogs won 48 games, one SEC championship, been to two BCS bowl games, and finished in the nation's top ten three times.

Following the 2006 season, all three of his starting LB's (Tony Taylor, Jarvis Jackson, Danny Verdun Wheeler) signed professional football contracts.

Jancek continually reconfigured a 2005 Georgia linebacker unit into a solid group despite being hit by a rash of injuries during the year. He helped lead a Bulldog defense that finished eighth nationally in scoring defense (16.4 ppg).

He was at Central Michigan from 2003-04 coaching the defensive line in 2003 before behind named defensive coordinator in 2004. Prior to joining the Chippewas, he was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach under former UC head coach Brian Kelly at Grand Valley State University, the 2002 NCAA Division II national champion.

A native of Muskegon, Jancek guided the Lakers into one of the top defensive units in Division II football during his four-year tenure from 1999-2002. GVSU opponents scored only 16.5 points per game in 2002 while posting a 14-0 record. Opponents managed just 279.9 yards per game in total offense and turned the ball over 36 times.

Jancek returned to his alma mater in 1999 after previously working as the defensive coordinator for three years at Hillsdale (1996-98). He also was the defensive tackles coach at Central Florida during the winter/spring of 1996. He also spent three years as defensive coordinator at Wayne State (1992-94). He spent the 1991 season as a graduate assistant at Grand Valley.

A 1991 graduate of Grand Valley and '94 master's degree recipient of Wayne State, Jancek was a three-year letterwinner with the Lakers as a defensive lineman. GVSU compiled a record of 28-7 during his three years and advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs twice. He earned All-Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference honors as a senior.

What exactly does co-defensive coordinator mean? Makes me nervous that he was fired at Georgia, and was still a "co" DC in Cinci. Is this really the best guy available to get our defense back to playing respectable football?

I'm with you. I'm still hoping he gets moved to another position. I don't want anything to do with Marti or Jancek after them getting booted from Georgia.

Did Jones say why he didn't want to go to UGA with Jancek on staff?

Not publicly.

It was nothing personal against Jancek and the rest of the coaching staff. Like all other high school players, Jones was looking for the program that would give him the best shot to make it to the NFL. This was around the same time that USCw was pumping linebacker after linebacker into the NFL.

So what's your objective AND subjective opinion of Jancek?

Ojective:
UGA did have some very good years on defense when Jancek was part of the coaching staff. The OP has a good breakdown of his good years at UGA.

Subjective:
I plea the Fifth.

Just took a look back at our 2011 stats against Cincinnati and even though it's maybe not a fair comparison talent wise it was ridiculous. Bray was 34-41 and we rolled up well over 500 yards. I really think CBJ needs to go a different direction here. Jancek was the co-coordinator when we played them but same difference.

Jancek as DC concerns me. He's a good position (LB) coach and decent recruiter. While at Cincy he split DC responsibilities with Stripling.
Before finalizing his staff, it is my hope that CBJ will at the very least consider looking outside (his current staff) for DC talent. Three that come to mind --- Zook, Heacock, and Narduzzi.
