I have been hearing a lot of complaints lately about coaching. Our receivers drop passes - bad coaching. Our tacklers miss tackles-bad coaching. Our kickers miss field goals - bad coaching. Anything and everything bad that happens is blamed on coaching. My question is this...did these guys come to UT with NO prior training? Just how much coaching is involved in a guy catching a ball anyway?? Stick out your arms and when the ball hits 'em WRAP IT UP!! Same for tackling AND kicking. It's not like the coaches can MAKE the guys do it, so when y'all talk about coaching, WHAT more can the coaches do?? I'm not trying to be smart-alecky, but it is REALLY beyond me how a dropped ball can be laid at a COACH'S feet.

I'll read the responses when I get home from church.

Well, the UT coaches need to constantly teach good technique and hope it translates to the games. It is the coaches who are working w/ these guys everyday. It's like the old story where the RB was fumbling too much so the coach had him carry the ball everywhere he went.

First, the receivers need to catch w/ their hands instead of their bodies. Then the receivers need to look the ball into their hands first and worry about running second. This is technique and can be taught.

Tackling is also about technique. I'm tired of seeing DB's just dive at the WR feet. They need to watch Jason Allen and learn. We have had some very well-coached LB's recently and our d-linemen are better than most. They do need to learn that an arm tackle on a 240lb running back isn't going to cut it. Get low and explode through him.

The only part I truly know about is kicking. It is all about technique and reps. The punters can be taught how to drop the ball and where to hit it on their foot. It's a very hard thing to master but the Colquitts seem to get it. (of course the last 2 were from Bearden but that's beside the point :D ) Our line is not getting a good enough push on FG it seems. Wilhoit appears to look up a bit too early on some of his kicks.

I'm sure many of the coaches we have here know more about this than I do but it's just my opinion. You can coach them all you want but it all comes back to discipline and technique. Some have it and some don't.

GO VOLS, BEAT THE PUPS!

If one thing for me has characterized the Vols over the last several years - it is lack of fundamentals and discipline.

At various times we've seen:

lack of tackling fundamentals

lack of players on the same page

lack of discipline off the field

etc.

We've made up for it with mistakes limited to one thing at a time and outstanding talent.

There are always trade-offs. If we could get it all clicking, we would dominate.

I agree, our superior athletes get by sometimes when all else breaks down.

I also think it's what RC meant when he said UT was due for a big play. If they can all get on the same page it could be beautiful to watch.

i have to admit it is tougher for us to play UF so early in the season than it is UF. For whatever reason we play better as the season goes on. Fulmer has 4 victories since coming here against UF and 1 of them was in November due to postponement. i dont know if it finding the right chemistry or the young players mature more later in the season.

1997 was not until the 4th ir 5th game the staff started to use jamaal. he still gained 1300 that year. He could have been used affectively against UF had we known what he was going to do.

I wish we could have Ky, vandy or even SC early on have UF late october or Nov. Every year the last game against them would be for the SEC east. I kinda fill bummed losing to UF so early and letting some the air out of the sails. perhaps we will be undefeated more often going into Oct or november.
