was watching Glenn Beck the other night and he had the president of Jet Blue on talking about converting coal to oil. We could become energy independent in 10 years. A plant to convert would cost something like 2-4 billion dollars.

You can find a lot on this, just search for coal gasification. However, the environmental nuts in the country will never let it happen.

i dont think there are enough of the environmental nuts to stop it.
You have much to learn. There are enough environmentalists to stop the US from drilling ANWR and from placing new oil rigs in the Gulf. There are certainly enough to keep us from persuing coal gasification (as the process itself is pretty pollutative<--not even sure if that is a word.)

I recall seeing something recently that the USAF is spending a bunch of money on this technology to ensure and adequate supply of Jet-A.

interesting, but not controversial enough for me. i am still waiting on fuel cells myself, they are certainly the wave of the future. we must stop being so dependant on oil.

it seems to me kinda like having a bad budget, you spend and spend and spend, then for the last week of the month you are screwed. except a lot more people go hungry this way.
