Cold War Back On?

Russia will forever be paranoid and perhaps with the occasional just reason. It's hard to imagine they would forever fade into history. A resurgence wouldn't surprise me at all, particularly if the economy aided that rise. Though...I would have to think cheap gas here in the US would slow that climb.....

Putin is dusting off all the old play books. I doubt the Peter the Great could make the trip any more, basically a resupply area for supply ships for their submarines?

If we would lift the trade embargo with Cuba they would welcome our dollars as much as Viet Nam does now. In my view, the paradigm is different now. It won't be a situation of the Russians get a base here, we get a base there. Instead, there will be access to supplies and maintenance contracts, with US and Russian sailors drinking at the same bars.

Doesn't surprise me. Putins been creeping that way since restarting the TU-95 bomber patrols over the Atlantic and Pacific in 2007-2008.

I'm going to go with incorrect on that one as long as there are a handful of nations with nuclear weapons stockpiles sufficient to wipe out all major US cities.

We will just have to disagree on this one then. :hi:
But I see and understand your point..

It is more likely that we will be destroyed from the inside-out. That is why the enemies here at home are a threat.

There are certainly internal threats - some of which could slowly bring America down. However, I find it hyperbole to suggest that no government *can* threaten America more than our own government. While it may be likely that more damage *will* be done from the inside out ... I would definitely argue that a handful of other nation's governments *can* threaten America more than our own government.

Remind me to tell you about the Russian Task Force that worked for us at Multi-Division North in Bosnia. You can only drink during a deployment when there are cultural requirements...weekly updates at one of my "subordinate" units followed by a 3 vodka lunch...

Having grown up during the Cold War, Russia will always make me paranoid. Is a base in Cuba that big of a deal? Probably not, but it plays on childhood fears. Logistics could be strange with Gitmo being right there.
