College football teams are planning to start the season off on a courteous note.

As part of a sportsmanship initiative, the American Football Coaches Association and NCAA are encouraging schools to arrange teamwide handshakes on the field before kickoff.

Grant Teaff, executive director of the AFCA, says college football players and teams are in a pressure-packed environment and that encouraging respect and sportsmanship is important.

“It is symbolic,” Teaff, a former Baylor coach, told USA Today. “But it is, we think, a very important initiative.”

Coaches are required to shake before and after games, but having players do it in an organized way is new. The handshake is only planned for the first week of games, and is not mandatory, though Teaff says all schools have been asked to participate.

The coaches association will discuss with the NCAA whether to make the pregame handshake a season-long routine, he said.

I don't see a problem with it the first game for us, but I don't think it's a good idea after that. Shake after the game.

What next, fans won't be allowed to boo the other team or use raucous cheers?

what's next....a timeout if you fail to shake hands? I am all for sportsmanship but let it take place during the game and afterwards. The best way to gain respect of an opponent is to earn it thru clean hits not shaking hands.

I would think UT fans would be very supportive of this. Kind of surprised at the negative reaction here.

Gee, the 'AA and a religious zealot like Grant Teaff combine to come up with a profoundly moronic idea. What a shock.

This could work if the coaches want it to. But if minutes before they are telling their team, "Show no mercy to these mofo's (or bozos)," then it probably won't go well.

just make sure a team like Miami doesnt go out there for pre-game shakes with their helmets

I just wonder when they'd do it. The T is off the field about a minute before kickoff...

I guess they'll have to push Pregame up a couple minutes to accomodate, or have the handshake at the end of warmups before the band spirals it up.

Im late hearing this, and just heard Rome mention it, in conjunction with the Tennessee/Florida game, so I did a quick google. Apparently it is a new idea that the NCAA is encouraging schools to participate in but is not "mandatory".

Thoughts? other than lulz.

I mean, do they know what they are asking for?
