The Cave(link)
This spring the Tennessee athletics department emerges out of hibernation and out of the cave that it has largely been relegated to for several years.
The athletic department (especially the men) have been in a self-inflicted slumber of apathy and underperformance which has only served to lessen the excitement of the fans and alumni.
There is no one cause for this hibernation. Poor recruiting, injuries, poor coaching, poor teamwork, bad luck, and the cyclical nature of college athletics have played a role. However, all involved (student athletes, coaches, staff and fans) have a role in getting us out of the cave.
So I propose a Springtime Renaissance. Where baseball leads the bear from the cave. Baseball has a new coach, new staff, new stadium and facilities so why not baseball.
Like a bear emerging from the cave; the student athletes, coaches, supports staff and fans need to be lean and hungry. Leave it to the fall sports to fatten up for winter. The baseball and the other spring sports must succeed early and often and be ready to feast on both the low lying fruit but also those goals that are high in the trees.
So, let us readjust goals and expectations as we bring some excitement back to The Hill. There is no better time to emerge from a dark cave than in the spring.
Again, I would love to see Vol Football join in with this initiative by having a meaningful Orange & White game on a weekend shared with baseball, track, softball and other sports.
It was a group effort that got the UTAD in this mess. Let's get ourselves out of this together the same way.
Every Spring sports should have a minimal goal of reaching NCAA post-season play. A better goal, would be to see every program ranked in widely accepted national polls. Half the programs should strive to host post season competition.
