I opened an email that I think may have given me a virus. I have run AVG which found no threats and Malware that found 15 threats that I got rid of (looked like a toolbar or something).
But my computer is still running really slow, it kept failing when I was trying Windows update, and won't really work in safe mode (screen stays blank with safe mode written in the corners). Its also running pretty hot and the fan is a lot louder than normal. Any ideas?

Any help? I'm gonna try to make a linux usb drive (using yumi) that will have avg and trinity rescue kit to see if I can do anything...

So far it found a Trojan Horse which I deleted. Hopefully that's all there is but I'm still scanning to be sure...

Good luck. I couldn't be of any help on this one. Trojans are good about slowing things down.

I know Trojans are/were common, but still don't know much about them as I've never personally come across one.

The computer symptoms were slowness, freezing, etc so do you think that might be the only problem?

Found more "potentially unwanted programs" that I deleted, but windows was still slow. Also it froze when I tried to shut down

Yea, struggling a bit. Not sure why it was still slow/froze after I removed the stuff it found while scanning

may be obvious but check to make sure avg isn't updating. mine seems to update quite a bit. and it takes forever.

Get on a computer that isn't infected and google/download the following, then install and run on your computer in safe mode.
Malwarebytes. You already have it but you probably can't update it. You can get just the updated defs and copy to the correct folder.
Combo Fix. Run in safe mode. Gets rid of nasty stuff but can also kill off some things you need.
I am also guessing you have Vista. When you get into Windows, run msconfig. In the boot tab uncheck the box for safe mode.

Its Windows 7, but I'm going to try that when its done scanning. Thanks for the idea

It freezes when I try to boot in safe mode...

It took forever but booted up in normal mode. I installed malwarebytes from the usb and am scanning. Hopefully it doesn't freeze before its done

Avira's rescue disks might help. Burn it on another computer, drop it in, and boot from CD.

On a couple machines that Malware just refused to run and/or finish, Avira was good enough to get rid of enough initial problems that I was able to run Malware afterwards.

I no longer have it, but about 2 years ago, I ran across a forum with an added script file to help Malwarebytes run. You'd run it first and it would kill a bunch of processes for the sole purpose of running Malware next. Wish I had it. Just a little .bat file if I'm not mistaken. Maybe you'll run across it at some point.

If you get it clean, dropping $10-20 on a Malwarebytes license might be a good choice. I haven't had any problems since I started using their real time scanner along with Windows built in stuff.

Or just quit looking at internet porn.

About to try the Avira Rescue DrRR, thanks for the advice.

Just now I turned it on and it said that Windows couldn't boot at all. It prompted me to do a Windows Recovery scan/troubleshoot to see if it could find any problems. It didn't find any twice, but once it did. It said it couldn't resolve it then shut down.

So now onto Avira RD...

I did the scan and it came up clean. I'm thinking I got rid of the virus/threats, but Windows is corrupted somehow because it either won't boot or will and freeze.
