For those of who have been skeptical of Gruden’s winning pct. as an NFL coach, I thought that it would be interesting to compare his record with those of Hall of Fame-caliber NFL coaches. I have not recalculated winning pct. based on the inclusion of post-season play, so all records reflect regular season games only:

Jon Gruden: 95-81-0 (.540)

Bill Belichick: 175-97-0 (.643)
Tom Landry: 250-162-6 (.607)
Vince Lombardi: 96-34-6 (.738)
Chuck Noll: 193-148-1 (.566)
Don Shula: 328-156-6 (.678)
Bill Walsh: 92-59-1 (.609)

Note: Only Gruden and Belichick coached exclusively within the parameters imposed by the NFL salary cap.

As you can see, numbers don't lie.

Bill Parcells, Bill Walsh, Jon Gruden, all only slightly better coaches than Derek Dooley.

Your logic and reason are not welcome here OP.

CPF had a win percentage of OVER 7.4!!!!!!!1!!!!1!!11!!!!!

And since college and pro win percentages are a DIRECTLY CORRELATED, we are hiring a coach that is OVER 20% INFERIOR to the legendary Fulmer AND only slightly better than Dools Almighty.

SAY NO TO THE GRUDES!!!!!!111! !!!!1!!!!!!!!!!eleven!!!!! ITS FOR TEH CHILDRENZ!!!!!

You cannot compare the college game to pro game as

1. college has no salary cap;
2. some pro head coaches do not make personnel decisions;
3. free agency;
4. smaller rosters in pros;
5. no draft in college.

It is much harder to win Super Bowl than natl title.

Precisely my point. I assume that several of the preceeding remarks, which drip with sarcasm, are intended to be facetious although one can never be absolutely certain, given the anonymity of internet message boards. The true measure of any coach is by comparison to his peers. Nobody, absolutely nobody, dominates the NFL in this salary-cap era the way some coaches rule or have ruled their respective conferences. A career winning pct. of .600 will put you in elite company in the NFL.

I just ran into a good guy. A guy who I am in no way disparaging. But he tried to make this argument to me.

Gruden only won .5 something of his games. Gruden was not successful as a Raider. Gruden is hated by players and coaches a like.

First, Gruden was wildly successful in Oakland. He had a .594 winning percentage there and left them as the best team in the AFC. He inherited a broken team as well and went 8-8 his first two years.

Second, in Tampa he had no control. He was in coach hell. Early draft pics were made by a couple of rich brothers and then left him to pick the last few rounds. He was not able to sign his own FA as well. He still had success initially but eventually the talent ran out after the Glasers ran it into the ground.

Lastly, This is a former Buc ripping Jon but listen carefully to what he says comparing Saban and Gruden. JoeBucsFan.com » Blog Archive » “Jon Gruden Is Inherently Dishonest.” - Tampa Bay Bucs Football

Getting Gruden will be like Christmas everyday for VOL fans. I cannot believe anyone doubts it. Kids will be jumping over themselves to play for us (Which is what really matters in college).
