Another poster made a comparison to the bowl game vs Nebraska in 97. Physicality dominated in that game from the start. If everyone recalls, the same thing happened to Florida 2 years prior. They played Nebraska and got whipped and the following year they won it all.

The question going forward to know if CJH is the man, will be how does he react to this loss as well as what needs to happen to play better on the road?

It seems to me that the best road game we have played in the last 4 years was against LSU 2 years ago. Why? The answer is simple. Recovered a fumble on the kickoff, scored quickly, got up and took the crowd out of the game.

I know the defense played like crap last night, but honestly if the defense had not played as well as they have all season, we loose at least 2-3 more games.

Will we return to the fast pace offense we had 2 years ago? You can’t run this system part time for it to work,

Bottom line is we have to score more points in the first quarter, home or away.

I think we'll need to get aggressive like OM and go get best players available for our deficiencies. Ultimately, we need better OL play, and WRs who can get separation. I was quite frankly very surprised at the lack of targets to TE position... WRs weren't getting open, and we've got decent TEs who generally are a good safety blanket.

11 players went to the portal, last number I saw, and that would have been some needed depth for last night. Sampson hurt on first series, done for the night. What happened to Campbell late in the game? Dayne Davis was right tackle in the 2nd half, at least some of it. He would get beat at the line of scrimmage and would be chasing his man, who would sack Nico.

Needs are glaring. Offensive line, both starting and depth, wide receiver is a big area of need going forward. Same with running backs, Sampson likely moving on, especially after getting injured in the last two, three games. He needs to go on to the draft while he can. Secondary needs some lock down DB's, safety's, defensive line, linebackers, and maybe most everyone on here are right, a new secondary coach.

I'm not taking anything from the teams results this year. They exceeded most prognosticators prediction for there record, and made it to the playoffs. The result from that sucks, but there were a lot of teams that weren't there. Onward and upward from here.

GO VOLS!!!

I remember that game vs. Nebraska. Peyton, Jamal Lewis, Al Wilson, couldn’t get it done. Last night was like that. Man-handled from start to finish.

Whomever evaluated Campbell needs to be put on suspension. He’s terrible.

None of those RBs would have played a down last 🌃

Good point…..

However, I don’t see an Al Wilson, Deon Grant, Travis Henry, Peerless Price, Dewayne Goodrich, type on the roster.

Al Wilson was worth 2 defensive players just with his attitude alone.
I think the program can definitely learn from last night like that Nebraska game but you're correct. The 98 squad was low key absolutely loaded coming into the season. I don't see that level of talent for next year's team although if Nico progresses a lot then that could make a huge difference.

In Peyton’s last year, UT played Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. The Vols were dominated on both sides of the ball, losing 42-17, the same score as last night.
I have read that after that drubbing, our players realized just how physical and well-conditioned they needed to be to play with the big boys. They took the lesson to heart, hitting the weight & conditioning room with new determination for the 1998 season. The rest, as they say, is history.
If nothing else, last night’s debacle should teach CJH, the other coaches, and especially returning players the same lesson: unless they become mentally and physically stronger , tougher, more aggressive, they cannot beat the UGAs and OSUs of college football.

Comparing this to 1997 just isn't realistic, and I'd probably go as far as to say its farcical. Tennessee was a juggernaut in the 1990s, and their roster was loaded and stacked year and year out for a while there.

When people talk about a team that "gets off the bus looking bigger and nastier," that was Tennessee back then. Mens upon mens upon mens. And while John Chavis had his problems, he almost always had excellent linebackers starting and more being taught in the wings. Tennessee was turning out a lot of quality defensive players back then.

I'm not saying Tennesse is bereft of talent or anything, but 1997? Nah. 1990s Tennessee was a championship level program in terms of talent, led by a staff that just couldn't figure out how to beat Steve Spurrier. Though to be fair to them, most people couldn't figure out how to beat Visorboy.

To be fair about this (for all old enough to remember), those Nebraska teams were head, shoulders, and whole body above everyone else. That ‘95 team was one of the best I can ever remember. Physical play doesn’t even begin to describe their style of play. And athletes at every position. They would kill this years OSU team…..and probably everyone, to be fair. Heck, go back a few years and Lawrence Phillips may have literally killed someone on the field 😅

Put some brakes on the negativity and consider the attached….

With the players leaving to graduation, portal, NFL this result Wil not happen next year. Until they get some big boys on the line on offense and defense that can play a whole game without sucking air, it's never going to get to the next level. Need more than one good running back. Have several plays instead of about 5. Last night it was boys against men. Out coached also.
