Is it just me or is Dooley setting up to be our version of Mike Shula? Maybe get us back to the edge of respectability and get replaced for not getting the W's.

He could be. Can't see how you can draw that conclusion yet.

EDIT: ^^^ and that

Son of a former coach that despite the fact that he is a very likable guy, continues to make subtle mistakes on Gameday.

Although there are some interesting parallels between what Bama was going through a few years ago and what UT is going through now, I think the Shula comparisons are a little strange. What separates him from most other mediocre coaches out there, other than the fact that Bama got Saban after firing him?

Son of a coaching legend hired into a job above his abilities or resume.

The roster is getting better under Dooley any way you slice it. If this comparison is accurate (which I don't agree with at this point), and Hart is as good of an AD as I think he is, there's no reason to think that UT won't try to make a splash hire. It won't be like a few years ago when they couldn't attract any great coaches because of the roster.

If he is he'll turn out to be a great hire, not in the W/L column though. Shula did what he was hired to do, get us through probation with his squeaky clean reputation and his ability to get at least a few good recruits. I know a lot of Bama fans b---- about Shula but without his hire we probably wouldn't have been able to hire Saban. UT was in a similar situation before CDD's hire, no big time coach wanted the job. IMO CDD will set the ground work for the recovery, as Shula did, but doesn't have the ability to bring the program back. He'll bring in a few good recruits though and that will make the UT job more attractive to the big time coaches when he's fired in a few years.

I think Shula's job performance is still vastly overrated by the fact that they got Saban after him. Did he get them through a rough patch? Sure. Does that mean he did something a bunch of other people couldn't have done? Doubt it.

maybe... but it's worth noting Shula beat Tennessee whereas, well, you know...

This is part of my comparison. Well stated.
