Conference USA reloading by adding 6 schools - CBSSports

Florida International, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Texas San Antonio, Charlotte and Old Dominion will join C-USA giving the league 14 members. However, it's not clear how soon after 2013 Charlotte, which is beginning its football program in 2013, and ODU, currently in the FCS, would be able to compete as a C-USA football member.

When completed, Conference USA's new 14-team league is expected to be split into two divisions: East - East Carolina, FIU, Marshall, Southern Miss, UAB, Charlotte and ODU; West - Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Rice, Texas San Antonio, Tulane, Tulsa and UTEP.

I'm glad for LaTech. They've been sitting in the WAC having to send teams to Idaho, Nevada, and Hawaii every year. Of all the new teams, they are making out the best in this deal.

What happened to the C-USA/MWC merger?

EDIT: Nevermind.

"
C-USA and the Mountain West originally were going to merge into one league, but there were too many legal obstacles and that will no longer happen, sources said. Instead, C-USA will increase to 14 members and the Mountain West will be at 10 members by adding Utah State and San Jose State in 2013, CBSSports.com reported last week.

Even though C-USA and the MWC will remain separate leagues, they continue to work together on a plan to share scheduling, television and marketing resources.

more than likely ODU will make the move with the CAA falling apart

Yeah, I totally agree. probably just a formality. But until it's finalized, I guess anything is possible. I just don't see what ODU brings to the table that MTSU doesn't.

Academics is only thing but judging by other teams that can't be it.

Surprised that they invite ODU and not App State. Is ODU good at football?

App State may well step up in classification within the next few years. I get the impressions that Charlotte and East Carolina banded together to shoot it down for now.

I don't think it's finalized, but the thinking is Appy St will be in the Sun Belt.

Man usually when teams step up divisions they get owned for awhile. Appy should stranglehold the SunBelt if they keep doing what they are doing. That jump to 1A will give them more depth too. If Im not mistaken FCS schools only have like 53 schollys where FBS have like 85 and even 70 on road travel roster.

Agree that they will come into that league and be in the top three teams immediately.

haha. I wonder what the freep has to say about this. . . :eek:lol:

Don't know, I'm not a subscriber... not many people are anymore. I'd think they would love to have App State in the FBS so all the Walmart wolverines can call for UM to play them every year to prove that the one loss was a fluke. They're such fragile people.

:eek:lol: yeah, I dont even go to the freep anymore, I dont want to give them the webhits.

I know that the Walmart Wolvies would all be calling for it, but unlike Rocky II, III, IV, VII, XVII, there wont EVER be a rematch with Appy State!!

Greatest game in the history of football, imo. :hi::)

Marshall didn't have much trouble, but they're the only school I can think of that really didn't skip a beat moving from 1-AA to 1-A.

Is ODU good at football?

Good is a relative term but when you consider that they have only played three seasons in their entire history, they're not bad. They held their own fairly well in a pretty good CAA conference last year.

The elite talent in the area will probably always bypass ODU as a possible football destination, but if they could parlay playing in a D1 conference into a convincing argument to keep the average to above average players local, they could continue to improve at a nice pace.

I don't think ODU plans to get the elite talent but taking the 2-3* guy (who may have some grade issues) out of Hampton Roads is still a solid plan. Lots of good players in the area

They've been an entertaining team to watch. Lost some games but have also challenged the traditional powers. Lost their starting QB last season and still finished well with a freshman backup. There will be some growing pains but they should be able to compete.

This could also be the key to them landing the rare guy above that 2-3* level, too. Aaron Sparrow and Mike Majette playing at Norfolk State comes to mind.

Exactly what I meant with the 2 and 3 stars guys though. In CUSA, that could turn out to be a very solid plan.

This plus the SJSU and Utah St to the Mountain West news likely kills the WAC, as far as football goes

Really wishful thinking. Theyll be competitive but those extra 20 scholarships at FBS level will take a couple of years to filter in and bring them to the upper level of the conference.

Depends... Obviously, Boise State would be the prime example of what FCS schools can do. They posted a winning record by their third season in the bigs. Granted, they had three or four I-AA teams on the schedule, but that's the case for any team transitioning in.

Western Kentucky also finished strong last season.
