for becoming the most improved player I've ever seen in my eleven years of following UT sports. You went from being a lackadasical no show, all talent-no heart post who thought he was a 3 (at least, that is what it seemed) to being the most consistent player last year and becoming the team leader this year.

I have no words for how incredible your improvement has been.

Dane Bradshaw wasn't benched for Steven Pearl.

It's not as black and white as getting benched for Pearl.....they served different roles...Pearl played defense set picks, dove for loose balls without many negative plays....Maymon is immensely more talented but had way too many negative plays.

I thought Maymon would blow up last yr but Goldens improvement surprised me more. As for Dane Bradshaw he went from 2nd or 3rd string PG to our starting PF....that was a much bigger surprise to me....Also Jajuan smith being a back up walk on to one of the best wing players in the SEC was a bigger surprise to me also.

Jujuan smith most improved.

I'd for sure put JaJuan smith up there with Maymon as most improved. Talk about a diamond in the rough! I know he earned a scholly at UT but did he have any offers before? At least mid major?

Also, great post zj. I think Maymon's dad and the whole culture in Wisconsin played a big part in the way Maymon was at Marquette and UT at first. You don't become a two time state player of the year and accept averaging 4 points a game while riding pine in your first year locally without a ton of people in your ear. Plus, his dad was pretty vocal about Buzz putting his boy in the paint and they didn't like their NBA chances being an undersized post player. I think he came to UT, got away from that mess and grew up by putting his team before him self. If I'm not mistaken, his dad was talking lottery his first couple of years. Maymon is undersized but he's made tons of improvements!

This. People forget there was a lot of question about Pearl even taking Maymon as a transfer because of the deal with his Dad and Marquette. Just to clarify, the Marquette situation didn't even last a year. Dad got Jeronne out of there after 9 games. I suspect Tennessee wouldn't have taken him except for Tobias Harris vouching for him. Jeronne had played for Tobias' Dad in AAU ball and had gotten close to Tobias. They recruited Maymon to Tennessee and sold him to the Tennessee staff.

And, great observation about him getting away from Milwaukee and having a chance to stand on his own. Probably a greater factor in his development than any of us know.

Interesting. I had no idea there was a connection between Harris and Maymon but that explains a lot.

I agree that Maymon wouldn't have been the player at UT as he is here because his confidence would more than likely be shot by now. If I remember correctly, Marquette had a couple of injuries in the post after Maymon left and he would of no doubt seen an increase in minutes but would have got destroyed splitting time at the 4 and 5. If you have to be undersized in the post, you for sure don't want to face Georgetown, Syracuse or any other BE team. Really glad he came here and accepted his situation for what it really was.

Yes, Harris pushed for Maymon. AAU teammates.

Some people remember S-Pearl quite differently than I do. I remember seeing talented guys sitting on the bench while Pearl took away valuable minutes playing for daddy - when he would not have even made the team on his own at any other SEC level school. He did give his all and take advantage of the situation.

We are supposed to get all excited that he could set a pick, hustle and play defense. They are all supposed to do that anyway. His liability on the offensive side caused other teams to double team our scorers. Meanwhile, future stars Maymon and McCrae sat. Their development did not occur until Coach Zo arrived.

Maymon has quickly become one of my favorite players, he's like a junkyard dog, just scrapy, and no homo, but I love how scary and intimidating he looks.

He has stepped up as the leader this offseason and I expect him to be very vocal during the season as well. I think it's going to be a great year on rocky top!!!

Future stars? McRae? He was given every opportunity in the world to run with that label last year and disappointed on the whole. Too inconsistent. He has a ways to go to be called a star, and as a freshman, he was nowhere close.

Maymon, in his limited playing time, didn't seem like a team player to me and wasn't ready to accept his position of PF. Maybe he needed extended playing time to show out, but he looked out of shape and a ball hog to me in his limited minutes. Seemed like he was trying to prove something. Took ill-advised shots way too often.

Pearl earned every bit of playing time he got. He busted his butt more than many players and got rewarded for it. Call it playing for daddy or whatever, but he had more heart than several other players. He understood that he had to work for it, unlike some of those 4 and 5 stars, and played ahead of them.

I thought Major Wingate improved a lot under Pearl and could have had a beast of a season if didn't get booted from the team. That being said, Maymon has really transformed himself into a solid post player and leader for this team. I hope he only gets better.

I loved Bruce, but I'm not sure he really put Maymon in the best spot to succeed.

Credit to Cuanzo as well for motivating Maymon and putting him in spots to succeed.

i know baby pearl was the only one that would go to the foul line and break down the zone when teams zoned us.

Credit to coach and player.

I think maymon being with his teammates year round helped too. His first year, he stayed up north till school started and didn't play with teammates during the summer, iirc. I think he was confused, lacked confidence, and felt like an outsider when he joined the team. That and the BP cloud didn't mix well.
Props to CM for telling him to step up and props to maymon for the work.
