Peyton Manning was his replacemen.
Peyton was the replacement, yes, but Helton started a few games after that before Peyton got the nod and Stewart transferred to A&M. And if I remember correctly, we needed Stewart’s Aggies to knock of Kansas State for the Big12 championship, which was one piece to us solidifying our hold on #1 spot on the BCS standings over Ohio State. So with that, we do owe Stewart just a little bit of extra gratitude, I think.

Actually, we did not. UCLA lost that same day. So. we still would have been in. If the Aggies had not lost the previous week to Texas, they would have had an argument over FSU.

But man, that KSU loss was brutal. As a KSU fan, you knew that opportunity would never happen again. It has not.

He was a better Pitcher than I remember. He still holds the SEC record of 47.2 scoreless innings. I also remember that we would even come in from 1st Base to close games.

Was anyone at "the game" when we was at Central High? That game is on YouTube. Shawn Summers was playing for Oak Ridge.

This.

I actually think Stewart hurt us because we ended up having to play a more talented FSU team. We would have crushed UCLA (who lost to Miami the same day aTm beat KState and who didn’t play any defense) and we would have handled KState fairly easily. I think if UT plays KState, we get a prettier win and don’t have to hear the “yeah, but they played without Weinke” crap.

I am now married to a KState girl and I’ve turned her into a Vol fan, but KState is now my 2nd team. They did come close again back around 2012, but had a bad loss to Baylor.

I remember UCLA lost too, but I always thought we needed them to lose as well as KSU that day. i could be wrong though, I can’t really remember the details of what “needed” to happen for us to stay #1.

You're not wrong. The Vols were in the top 2 in the BCS rankings. KSU and possibly UCLA could have jumped in the mix with big wins which included Saragin ratings, etc at the time that kind of skewed the BCS rankings. They made some corrections between that first year and the next.
