We monitor. My kids' lexile scores put them in position to read more mature material, but instead of being Karens and ruining things for everyone we actually have open, honest relationships with our kids.

I think there is an agreeable middle ground here. Reader apps could provide better parental controls to give parents some ability to limit what their children can check out or at least let the parent monitor their child’s reading list. Parents who didn’t care wouldn’t have to use it and parents who did care would feel much more comfortable with their kid having access to the service. Win/win
