I wll return to analyze the legitimacy of the 1967 Vols' claim in another post. I will presume, for the sake of argument, however, that your rationale for refuting that team's claim is based on failure to be ranked 1st in either of the two major polls then active (AP and UPI). That is cetainly a defensible position. Let's apply that same standard, however, to Alabama!!!
Consider the following data:
"1925 The 1925 Alabama Crimson Tide football team, coached by Wallace Wade, completed the regular season 900, winning the Southern Conference championship. . . . The 1925 Alabama football team finished the season with a 1000 record and was selected national champions by the Football Annual, Billingsley, and the Helms Athletic Foundation."
"1926 The 1926 Alabama Crimson Tide football team, coached by Wallace Wade, completed the regular season 900, winning the Southern Conference championship. Alabama was then invited to play Stanford in the January 1, 1927 Rose Bowl. Coach Wade's team tied the Indians 77 to finish the season 901. . . .The 1926 Alabama football team was selected national champions by Billingsley and the Helms Athletic Foundation."
"1930 The 1930 Alabama Crimson Tide football team, coached by Wallace Wade, completed the regular season 900, winning the Southern Conference championship. Alabama was then invited to play Washington State in the January 1, 1931 Rose Bowl. Coach Wade's team defeated the Cougars 240 to finish the season 1000. . . .The 1930 Alabama football team tied with Notre Dame as national champions in the Davis Poll."
"1934 The 1934 Alabama Crimson Tide football team, coached by Frank Thomas, completed the regular season 900, winning the Southeastern Conference championship. Alabama was then invited to play Stanford in the January 1, 1935 Rose Bowl. Coach Thomas' team defeated the Indians 2913 to finish the season 1000. . . . The 1934 Alabama football team was selected national champions by Dunkel, Williamson, and Football Thesaurus" (
Alabama Crimson Tide football - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ).
As you well know, the Coaches' poll did not exist formally until 1950, when it was then known as the UPI poll (
Coaches' Poll - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ), and the AP Poll did not exist continuously until 1936 (
AP Poll - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ). The period before then was the proverbial Wild West of college football.
THERE WERE NO POLLS THEN, SO PLEASE FORGIVE ME IF WE DON'T TAKE "NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS" CONFERRED BY INDIVIDUAL ANALYSTS (EITHER CONCURRENTLY OR RETROACTIVELY) OR ENTITIES THAT DID NOT EVEN EXIST DURING THE SEASONS IN QUESTION!!!
By those criteria, four of those championships are bogus claims, irregardless of how strong those teams were. Four out of fourteen is roughly 28.57%, hardly the pristine status that you claim.
