Think I was using bad info last night.

The SEC tournament is 12-teams this season with 2-teams not qualifying. The leading contenders for those 2-spots has obviously emerged in Auburn and Georgia who are winless with some.

LSU and Vanderbilt really benefited from a soft schedule thus far as both have played Auburn. Vandy has played 9th place Florida and LSU has played 9th place Miss State. Kentucky has played Miss State and hapless Florida.

This weekend:

Tennessee at Vanderbilt
Georgia at Kentucky
Mississippi St. at Arkansas
Texas A&M at South Carolina
Alabama at Auburn
LSU at Missouri
Ole Miss at Florida
Tennessee at Vanderbilt

so, LSU continues their soft schedule that will surely hit a difficult stretch in coming weeks.

UK plays another cupcake in UGA and Alabama plays the other cupcake in Auburn

It's now or never for South Carolina. They're pre-conference schedule obviously did not prepare them for SEC play. They host aTm.

Barring upsets, I believe the standings this time next week will look remarkably similar. Vols may fall back a level to the MSU, UF and Mizzou plateau.

It will take an upset for UGA and AU to win games this weekend. Moreso for UGA.

The conference looks really top-heavy this season. Still, the SEC may get a record 9 or 10 teams in NCAA tourney field.

I was at all 3 Vandy Florida games this past weekend and I will say I do not know how that Florida team has the record they have. That is a very good team. They will pick it up and if Ole Miss goes into that series overconfident, they will get brought down to earth real quick.

I wouldn't consider MSU soft. I watched them play against LSU. They are a very talented team and should have taken 2 out of 3 from LSU.

There's not a whole lot of insight to be gained from studying early season conference standings.

Last year, South Carolina was 1-5 after two conference weekends and made it to the national championship game. Vols were 5-4 after three conference weekends and finished last in the conference.

One number that is worth monitoring is how many games ahead of the 13th place team we are.

If we can keep that number around two or three through this next four-week stretch of Vandy, SC, Kentucky, and Ole Miss, Hoover will start looking like a realistic goal. It may not sound like much, but not only has no current member of the Vols roster been to Hoover, no current member of the Vols roster has even played with a teammate who went to Hoover. Even with the new 12-team format, getting there would be an important step forward.

They're soft because they were treated with kid gloves. Their pre-conference schedule was embarrassing and is the same nearly every year. The schedule does not prepare them for the rigors of SEC play and they always seem to be the "hottest" team when the 1st SEC series comes around and are more often than not struggling for air by Late-April.

This is why they're "soft". For whatever reason, MSU does the same thing in several sports including basketball and their administration never notices.

The fact that they "almost" or "should have" won the series is the Bulldogs modus operandi nearly every year.
