Now that the COT is going to take a few weeks off before we see it again, now seems to be a good time to evaluate the racing and see what everyone thinks about the new car.
Personally, I see very little difference in the racing. The racing is still bad and passing is still extremely difficult. The dreaded "aero push" is still very much prevelant in all the races. I think some people think that just because some of the finishes to the COT races have been pretty exciting that the overall racing is better, when in reality, it's not better but probably worse because the car is so hard to turn. Jeff Gordon said it best during his post-race interview yesterday saying, "I'd like to know who said this car would take away the push because I could have told you the first time I drove this car, it's going to make it worse." Track position has never been more important and more and more races are being won on pit road rather than on the track.
It's hard to say the car is much safer because we have yet to see a severe wreck in the car. However, there have been some major wrecks with the old car this year (Reutimann at California, Gordon at Charlotte) and those drivers walked away fine. The old car seems pretty safe, not to mention, it looks a heck of a lot better.
Overall, I'd give the new car a C so far. It hasn't made the racing horrible, but it's not made it better either like we were told it would. It looks bad, but they keep saying it's going to be safer. I think there's still room for judgement. We need to get it on a speedway where speeds are up and we'll be able to tell more..
