I’m trying to think about true road games (other than Vandy) where the Vols had as many as 20,000 people lined up to welcome the buses to the Stadium .
Could we see something like that in Columbus?

I think we might top that in Columbus unless people are late arriving to the stadium because of the cold and want to stay in warm hotels, restaurants, and bars as long as possible before kickoff.

The bowl games are usually big. I especially remember the Taxslayer Bowl being a massive turnout.

One of my favorite memories is when Vol fans gathered at Centennial Park on West End in Nashville, right across from the vandie stadium/landfill. The Vol fan-walk was awesome, stopping traffic as throngs of Orange-clad Volunteers stormed into "little Neyland" for another glories stomping of the commode-doors. (Am I showing my slight bias?)

Yes, because it’s being held on the host teams field and only 3500 tickets were given to the visiting schools unlike bowl games and neutral sites where there’s an even distribution and games are not played on home fields.
