Press release
The New England Patriots and Head Coach Bill Belichick have begun contract extension discussions with Jerod Mayo that would keep him with the team long-term.

He had been asked by the Carolina Panthers to interview for their vacant head-coaching job. Now he was staying in New England and turning down a shot at fulfilling his self-proclaimed dream of becoming a head coach. “Some people, I don’t know what it is, have that it factor. And he’s got it,” said Brandon Spikes, a former teammate. “He makes everyone around him better. He’s a perfect human being. If I had a son, I’d want him to be just like Jerod Mayo.”

I honestly believe the deal is already made and in place for him to replace beliCHEAT whenever he decides to call it a career.

I think the owner has already put a deal together and they're just waiting for beliCHEAT to decide how many more years he wants to keep going on.

Mayo has certainly made Tennessee very proud at every level of the game.

I wouldn't mind him on the Hill but I also won't mind Keeping CJH on the hill for 25 more years.

VFL...GBO!!!

Once Belichick retires, the Patrioys will have their choice of any coach to replace him in the NFL.

Replacing a legend is never an enviable task and that goes double when it’s your first HC opportunity.

Agreed. If I were in his position I wouldn’t want to succeed Belichick. But he has a lot of ties to that organization and i can see why he would want to stay with the Patriots.

Really wish Mayo would take a shot at coaching college ball, but from all I've read about him he absolutely loves the NFL game.
He's going to win a Super Bowl as head coach one day...mark it down.

As good of a college player as he was, he was an even better pro. He had that elite sideline-to-sideline speed as the league was realizing that mattered more than size.

I read the article in the Athletic. If anyone’s prepared for that baptism by fire, it might just be him. Really multi-faceted young man who didn’t immediately jump into coaching after his playing career.

Unfortunately that playing career was cut short by injuries. I’d be interested to see what he does as a coordinator rather than just a position coach. It’s not surprising that Belichick wants to hand the reins over to another defensive guy.

He’s been the de-facto DC the past few seasons. Belichick simply never outright named him as such. I referenced the article where Brandon Spikes remarked that Mayo always knew the gameplan before the other defensive players were briefed at 7:30 in the morning…because he attended the coaches meeting at 6:30. He was coaching from day one as a player.

Follow up from today

Owner Robert Kraft thinks that current New England assistant Jerod Mayo could be the heir-apparent to current head coach Bill Belichick, he told NFL Network on Monday. Here’s what you need to know:
  • Kraft said there is “no ceiling” for Mayo when it comes to his coaching career.
