Could Memphis go to the Big East?

we wouldn't be able to call them Tiger High anymore. Maybe Tiger Community College?

That would be fitting. If they make this change, their football program is going to have to make some major changes.

The Big East is already the nation's best basketball conference. It's going to be untouchable with the addition of Memphis.

That would be great. But, that would only make Memphis stonger.

More opportunities for them to lose. If they played a big east schedule last year they lose three or four in conference easily.

With Memphis possibly moving to the Big East there would be 7 teams from that conference that would be ranked in the top 15-20 next season

No new news here - UofM wants in a BCS conference, but no BCS conference wants UofM.

Best thing about that story was the reporter, Kristin Tallent, which is a very appropriate name.

I would hope so, they need some competition.
Outside of MSU and Kansas, they smoked some pretty good competition in the tourney.

I am not sure that team would have lost 3 or 4 BE games very easily. Not saying they would run the table but UM did beat the conference champs by 14.

It looks like RC Johnson and Shirley Raines might actually be getting their heads out of their asses and realizing that Cal won't be there forever to keep the program prevelant. It will be easier to bring in a top tier coach to replace Cal (whenever that might be) if they are in the BE and not Conference America.

Won't be next season, I heard on ESPN that it takes at least 1 year for these type of moves to take place. Could be for the following year though.

All excellent points...

ECU is also trying to make the upgrade from CUSA to Big East. So when it comes to football facilities (which would be the deciding factor), ECU is better than Memphis.

Can you get us a link to show ECU's stadium so we can compare it to the Liberty Bowl?

Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Don't get me wrong, the Liberty Bowl is a piece, but this stadium is 2 years older and seats 20,000 less people than the LB. Granted it has had some renovations but those were 10+ years ago. I think it is a draw (roughly) on football stadiums and probably even football programs.....so the basketball facilities and program should easily make Memphis more enticing. Media market has a lot to do with it as well. Big East teams could then possibly recruit the south easier (this could technically go for ECU or UM).

It's been reported on the local radio shows here that all this is untrue , per RC , Cal , and the Big east Athletic director. They said it had been fabricated by Fox . I would have to imagine Vols fans would like this though . It would give you guys an anual win over a better conference:banghead2:

I don't understand why Memphis would want to stay in the Big East other than racking up easy wins in CUSA. There is so much more money to be had by Memphis if they would go to the Big East... one day...

Good, the Big East is big enough anyways. We don't need a single conference containing half of D-I.

There would be more conference shifting if that happened.

I don't think Cal wants to leave C-USA and I think the same might go for RC. Ask most Memphis fans and they will ask where they sign up for the BE. The Cincy and Loserville games alone would be worth it, for the schools and the ratings.

Not this Tigers fan , I'd just as soon try to play those schools out of conference.

I believe you are in the minority. It is hard to go to games against Rice, SMU and Tulsa back to back to back. I would rather be 28-6 and play the likes of G'town, UL, Cincy, Marquette, Pitt, Nove, WV, etc. than be 33-1 and play Rice, Houston, UAB, Tulane, etc.
