Could Screens Have Saved...

Usually you try to throw in the direction from where the blitz came from. Short throw and let a athlete make someone miss. Do it successfully enough and they will stop blitzing. Honestly we have not been blitz much so our boys just weren’t ready to handle it. I think the coaches will learn from this and be ready next time.

Screens take a bit to develop and GA was on HH in a second. I've wondered about draw or shuffle pass. Typically on those blitz's the MLB stayed home. This would have given the ball carrier a 1 on 1 opportunity.

Almost -all- analysis I've seen have said 2 definitive things:

* UGA started bringing some absolute habanero when the rain started coming down. Almost all sacks were by LBs and DBs.

* Hooker did himself absolutely no favors by being a statue in the pocket. Didn't roll out, sense pressure and held onto the ball for WAY too long. Even Coach30 clowned him because of it.

Hooker from 7 sacks and the Vols a loss?
And will we install them now? We're surely going to need them after UGA's success with blitzes.

The Georgia game is over. Let's go beat Missouri. We lost, now let's go win a game. Wallowing in mud only gets you dirty, and confused with a pig.

I think Hooker goes to the line with about 3 options on every play. He wasn't reading where the blitz was coming from. They seemed a little stubborn and just figured they'd finally hit a few of those deep shots. Never happened.

Idk if we would have necessarily picked up huge yards with a screen or 2, but the *threat* of a screen surely would have kept them from bringing OLBs every other place.

No! It might have taken Ga. one or two to adjust but nothing could have saved us in this game. Sorry! Better team having a "best of season effort". We as a fan base need to face it and move on to the rest of the regular season and hope to get a redemption game in the playoffs.

I think if we had a dynamic running back, we’d be absolutely equipped for that. Imagine if we had Kamara or Hurd? Damn…

Small is serviceable. But if I’m a RB recruit, I’m looking at Tennessee and saying sign me up for that as long as we show an ability to use the RB effectively.

I think what you said will be implemented with Hooker attacking the perimeters. You gotta make this defense play laterally.

Heupel is a damn good coach and he’s going to make sure we have the ability to stretch them and force Georgia secondary to make plays to stop Hooker from running. Hooker is going to run for 100+ every game here on out. And they all better be perimeter attacks.

Those blitz packages by UGA were something new that UGA implemented specifically for us. They had not shown any of those blitz packages on film in their previous games. So there is no way that our coaching staff could have prepared for those blitzes which is why we got sacked 7 times. If we get a chance to play UGA again it will be different because we will have seen how they blitz and have some film on how their defense plays against our offense.

You would think after what happened last time with the Georgia blitzes, they would have done something to stop the blitz but we played the same old offense. Yes, we have scored a lot of points this year but Georgia played us the same way defensively this as they did last year and we did not learn. Kirby blitzes every down! Poor coaching!!!

I love Hooker but there was nothing more frustrating than watching him take a 2 step drop on a deep ball and stand there and stand there hold the ball and eat the sack. Throw it away or run outside the pocket, good lord i was so annoyed watching that. No adjustments to pick up the blitz or screen passes or dump offs. Hooker has to help his Oline more than standing there two yards directly behind them and not moving and holding the ball forever.

you're stating Huep is not capable to call a time out and adjust? It bothers me our coaching staff can only 'plan' for what they see on film and cannot 'adjust' in real time for what a team is doing. I've never coached and gotta say this is new for me to understand. WOW!

I'm just saying that you cannot game plan for what you do not see on film...thats why its hard to beat a team twice

There are times when he should throw it away

Not nearly as much as Hooker simply trusting his WR's deep and letting the ball go. On every sack I remember, he looked as if he were going to throw and then pulled it down. I love Hooker. He's great. But UGA played tighter than he was used to and made him indecisive.

For what little it might be worth... I don't honestly think UGA would see that again should the Vols and Dawgs meet again.

UT has 3 games. IMHO, UT needs to continue to develop on D. They have some opponents that will challenge them just enough to do that. Hooker needs to use this game to improve his anticipation.

There may be a place for screens but IMO the better choice would be running check downs into the flats or short middle. I don't think screens would have helped much against a D as fast and well coached as UGA.

COMPLETELY agree with that... I know it happens fast but was surprised there weren't even any throw aways
