The Vols previous opponents rank the following in total defense:
Alabama 4th, Florida 5th, Georgia 14th, LSU 22nd, Ole Miss 23rd, and UAB 43rd.

None of the Vols remaining opponents rank even as high as UAB  ......

South Carolina is 50th in total defense.... and give up close to 170 ypg rushing.

ND is 97th in Total defense, giving up over 400+ ypg...

Memphis is 93rd in total defense giving up over 400+ ypg.

Vanderbilt is 74th in total defense giving up 393 ypg.

Kentucky is 100th in total defense giving up 432 ypg.

I just got through mentioning this in another topic.  :biggrin2:

I was going to list those under the other topic, but thought they deserved the very own spot

I tried it on another board and I was met with "Yeah they are top 25. They played UT", or words to that effect.

They've all played 7 games with the exception of LSU which played 6. It only takes 1 or 2 games to really screw up a teams' total defense stats. The Vols put up close to 400 yards against Ole Miss too.

I think it is worth mentioning that our offense last year wasn't real good either. We padded our stats with some bad teams and fluky situations. However, here is what it looked like against the members of the "Big Six":

Rushing - Passing - Total Yards - Points

FLORIDA 171 232 403 30
AUBURN 107 186 293 10
GEORGIA 127 150 277 19
BAMA 63 132 195 17
AUBURN 228 69 297 28
139.20 153.80 293.00 20.8

If you'll notice, we failed to get 300 yards in all but one game (against an OK FL defense). We failed to get 200 yards against BAMA. We failed to score 20 points in 3 of 5.

This isn't a gripe post, but more of a leveler for everyone that seems so shocked by what we've got. This was not and is not a good offensive football team. I'm not sure what people were looking at when they talk about "the 2004 was so much better and I don't understand it."

Yes.

With just a couple of breaks we could be 5-1.

Georgia just outplayed us.

Bama should have been a win and Florida was very beatable.

Things will get better but our offense will not realize its full potential until next year.

I think that if we line up and play power football and run more I and play the kind of D we have all year and DON"T turn the ball over we win out. :twocents:

I hate RS and all those not smart enough to realize he is the plague of our program, since 1986! :puke:

Dropped pass by Bret Smith in the endzone in the first half. Interception on a bad pass the next play.

A 13-7 game broken open by a punt return for a touchdown in the 4th quarter.

A couple of plays go the other way, the Vols beat the Dogs. However, turnovers and special teams are part of football and that is why the Vols lost. But the Vols held their own at the line of scrimmage until the game got away in the 4th quarter after that punt return.

Throw the chop block call in there too. We went from Riggs running it down to the 10 to 4th and a mile from the 50.

I agree with you that its time for RS to start looking elsewhere for a job.

The only thing that I've been arguing for awhile is that CPF would never get rid of him and it is fruitless for people to even discuss it. However, if the offense fails to perform and the Vols lose any of the games against their remaining "unranked" opponents... I think the pressure will be too much for CPF to do nothing.

On the other hand, if the Vols go on to win their remaining games, including Notre Dame, and a bowl to finish 9-3.... I don't expect CPF to do anything. He may do nothing if the Vols only lose to ND and finish 8-4.

And yes, RS' 3 interceptions versus BC still haunt me. Even Sterling Henton almost brought the Vols back to victory that day. (Vols lost 20-18)
