Saw a comment from Romney last night where he indicated we could never build the Interstate system today given the EPA and other regulatory agencies that would create endless delays via impact studies etc.

What say you? Does the regulatory environment today make these type projects virtually impossible? (forget the political will part).

the amount of paperwork that has to be filed to do business in the country is insane anymore.

despite what the msnbc commercials say, there isn't an effing chance we will have major public works on the scale of an interstate highway or the Hoover dam in today's regulatory climate.

the permitting costs and the costs of all of the necessary EIS's would make any project cost prohibitive.

the hech hechy debate going on in California is a contemporary example illustrating why these types of large scale projects wont happen today.

Look at the I75 bypass that was designed for traffic stay west of knoxville go through Harden Valley and connect back to I75 north of Knoxville as an example. It was studied for 10 years approved and now its all but dead due the law suits, naturist, red tape.

That is funny. I was casually listening to the radio and I think the reporter had said something about the Savannah-Knoxville interstate (I-3) was in trouble. I hadn't been able to find a story on it yet though to see what was the deal.

I give you H3, 13 miles of federal highway in Hawaii. It took 27 more years to build than expected and was hundreds of millions of dollars over budget.

On the other hand we just constructed new ADA compliant corners on every street in the nation with federal stimulation money. I guess with the right special interest involved we could do it. Sort of like the deer paths over I78 in New Jersey. In other words I'm sure we could build an interstate tortoise highway system...

No chance for the interstate system in today's environment. In a similar vein, a pharmacologist told me that in today's environment, aspirin would have no chance of being approved by the FDA due to bleeding issues.
