"If you're going to win championships, you better be able to play defense, you better have a good kicking game and you better be able to run the ball," he said. "Everything else is gravy."

What else IS there???

Yeah, that throwin' the ball all over the place stuff is just, well ... gravy.

I knew he came from an era that preceeded the forward pass.

I just love old timey football. :D

related in a way:

I've seen lots of folk saying UAB had 8 & 9 'in the box' on defense. I've read at least two published articles that say they were only using 7. The most recent is the 'slow start' piece linked on the front page containing this, UAB coaches were surprised the Vols were unable to run against seven men in the box and a two-deep zone.

If this is true, no wonder Coach Fulmer is 'hot' about the running game.

I think some people are probably clueless as to what "the box" even is and assume that if they can see the defenders in the camera shot then they must be in the box. You're right, UAB rarely was walking an 8th guy down into "the box" and was dropping into a zone most of the day.

My other pet peeve is the people complaining about all the screens. I just don't remember there being that many screen passes called. Just because the ball gets thrown to a RB or gets out quickly to a wideout, it ain't a screen!?

All in all I think we are in a good position - we got the reality check we needed. 8 or 9 in the box doesn't matter, what matters is that we won - Riggs carried for 100+ and didn't look like he was even tired. All in all it was a lack luster performance - the best part is that while we got our bubble burst - other bubbles are growing - if you get what I am saying.

Right! Clausen just throws the FB and RB a lot as an outlet. I said yesterday, it Clausen continues to start and play, Anderson is going to be one of our leading receivers. I'm not knocking Clausen by saying that, I think that Ainge still needs to figure out he also can throw to the RB's when nothing is available.

Anyway, Fulmer also said that he was very disappointed in the lack of physical play from the offense as a whole.

We've always been able to run on Florida. Don't worry, We'll be fine in G-town.

You hit the nail on the head there. Ainge is like most young QBs that think that something big needs to happen on every play. I remember hearing Archie Manning say one time that the hardest thing for him to get across to Peyton was that it's OK to throw it away and punt.

Let me counter sink the nail now.

This is exactly what Erik's problem is.

The poor kid's heard about his ability to stretch the field until he has developed a mental problem about it.

A safety valve is always better than an interception thorwn into coverage.

In all fairness to Ainge, he is aware of this. I talked about this a while back and someone gave me a hard time about it. Then Ainge himself was quoted saying that he has learned from watching Rick that he can dump the ball to the back when nothing is there. I still don't see him doing it much though.

Like Rick often says, sometimes it's best to just get the ball in the playmaker's hand....

How about a "lateral passing" game ?

Running game; running game; running game.

We are supposed to be some hard-nosed run the ball football team. Fulmer said this was the best offensive line UT has had in ten years. I have heard Fulmer say that before and when all was said and done, we were a little above average at best in the line play. I will however withhold my judgment on this o line due some key injuries at center.

Tennessee has a whole lot of work to do if they want to compete for an SEC championship and even more so for a national championship. I still say throw the freakin ball to the middle of the field. Wait, the middle of the field does not really exist in the minds of some UT coaches; it is like the twilight zone.

you just aint kiddin patrick, to beat florida, georgia, lsu, alabama, hell anybody we play we better start learning how to throw down the field, heck everybody knows our stupid game plan, rb off tackle, or a screen to a receiver, thats the only plays we have run in the last 5 years.

Actually, I think you might be a little off on the "gravy" part of the quote. I'm pretty sure he said "Everything else should have gravy on it."

Ha!! Very good.

Come to think of it, he might have said, "I like gravy, even at Shoney's."

He said "When I'm through with those Gators, they'll LOOK like gravy."
