Is that we didn't even play our best game of the year.

Hooker throws his first INT of the year
Gift wrapped TD for Alabama on mesh point miscommunication fumble
Hooker had an overthrow that if he puts a touch more air under it, its another 6 ( can't remember the receiver)
Keyton/Hooker timing off on a couple throws (1 specifically would have been a TD)
Defense had several opportunities to get Bryce Young on the ground and took poor pursuit angles, although credit him as well

Heupel mentioned in his press conference yesterday that this team got a good dose of reality. I know he will keep this team focused and hungry to keep getting better.

Here is something else really strange about the game. Bru McCoy had a catch on the 1st offensive play from scrimmage and the very last offensive play from scrimmage. But not a single reception in between. I don't think he was even targeted. That just struck me as very odd.
I have noticed that HH often, but not always, tends to stay focused on the initial side of the field to which the play was designed. Rarely does the progression go beyond one or two, which is good as far as his health is concerned. Too many QB hits this year.

Yeah, I thought the same thing after the win. Threw a pick and gave up a fumble TD and still won against Bama.

I'd have to go back and watch the replay, but I suspect a big part of this is that Kool-Aid was lined up on his side of the field a good bit. We didn't throw at #1 very often the entire game. In fact, I kept wondering why they didn't have him over Hyatt more than they did.

Also, I think Bama's defense is better suited to match up against big, physical WRs than burners like Hyatt. Guys like Stewart (A&M) and Worthy (Texas) are quicker guys, well under 200 lbs, are the type who have had more success vs. Bama.

I don't think they were going to let Bru beat them. Up to that point he was the bigger threat. Why Bama never adjusted to #11 streaking by their safety is very confusing though

The season has been building up like 1985.

After Jeff Powell scored against Miami in the Sugar Bowl, Frank Broyles said "When nobody cares who gets the credit..." He never completed the statement. But everyone knew what he was talking about. Miami had more talent, ego-first talent. Tennessee had the more complete team.

These guys are like those guys. Things are going to improve on both sides of the football because the attitude is stridently team-first. And the longer this year rolls on, the more problems our opponents are going to have with this Tennessee team.

I kept expecting them to adjust too. I think Hype added a few subtle wrinkles in how he lined up Hyatt and it confused their D. They kept expecting one thing and got something totally different each time.

Yeah, it looked like one he could have made a play on but he stopped running and tried to jump for the ball. It was weird.

He'd stumbled and seemed to panic and just turn around and hope for the best. Had he not it was 6, he was wide wide open but wasn't where he was supposed to be due to the stumble.

We didn't play our best defensive game, obviously--but we scored 52 points against alabama. I'm quite sure that is topping out offensively. If we played bama again, I doubt we'd score 52. Maybe--but I wouldn't count on it. Also, if we were to play bama again, they would not have 17 penalties--a ridiculous number. We could certainly beat bama again--but we'd have to play another excellent game. That remains a very good team. You point out our mistakes as if we or any team could play a perfect game. Doesn't happen. Not going to happen. The fact that we only had a handful of bad plays is evidence of how tremendously we played on offense in that game. We could, yes, eliminate the two turnovers--but there are always going to be mistakes and missed plays.

Yup. Hooker had two bad throws to Keyton on 4th down that would have blown the game wide open to a point where I think Bama wouldn't have been in it

I hear you but we did so many other things well that we'd almost be asking for perfection. Notably, protection and running lanes from the o-line, not many missed tackles on defense, not many dropped balls (if any), no fumbles, etc.

But back to your original premise, which was positive and I agree... the thing that gets me more fired up is the fact we were playing without Tillman, Mincey, and 4 DBs. We have the opportunity to get better from a health standpoint.

And lastly, the most exciting thing to me is we are getting better every week. We might be favored by the time we get to Athens.

He got held a little on that play. I do think he let off the gas as well too soon but I think I remember the defender holding him a little on the route.

Yeah - you picked up the point of my post. Not to be negative or take anything away from what the team accomplished but to highlight what Heupel and this staff will use to keep this team improving week over week. Keep them focused on UTM and Kentucky and not look ahead.

Two things in my opinion:
1) Heupel’s system designs plays to keep switching #1 target based on Match ups. Bru had big games last two weeks and Alabama probably covered him well.
2) Hyatt being faster got behind DBs on designed plays and took it to home. Hyatt was only targeted 6-7 times. On one TD, Bru was wide open behind Hyatt so if Hyatt wasnt so open for TD, it likely goes to Bru for 1st down.

It is easy to forget Hyatt only had 6 targets. He just made rhe most of them and in that regard he did have a perfect game. Hooker had what will likely end up being the best game of the year for a QB against Bama and with only one sack I'd say our Oline had a nearly flawless game also.

Funny thing is: I've heard again and again on bama sports radio this week, "well, UT played their best game ever and we played our worst and they barely won."

Um???? Here's a free scoop and score for you. And....here's the first int from Hooker in a season. And here's a walk-on db.

Yeah, Vols best game. Lol
