ESPN - Cubs owner: Naming rights for Wrigley Field on the table - MLB

CHICAGO -- The chief executive officer of the Tribune Company said Wednesday he won't hesitate to sell the naming rights to Wrigley Field -- even if baseball purists don't like the idea.

During an interview on CNBC, Sam Zell said despite Wrigley Field being known worldwide, he didn't get a discount because he wasn't going to use the naming rights that the field represents.

Zell said he plans to sell the Cubs and Wrigley separately and in his own time frame. He also disclosed that Major League Baseball has approved "four or six" potential ownership groups and that any one of them would be fine.

The sale of the team has been delayed by Zell's plan to sell the team and the stadium separately, and to have a state agency acquire and renovate Wrigley.

That's crap!

I could see the new Yankee Stadium at some point having a corporate name.

Wrigley needs subtle renovation....

I dont think any advertiser will want the negative stigma of replacing Wrigley Field as the name. If this happens I think it would be more along the lines of "K-mart Stadium - Wrigley Field".

It would merely be semantics....for all baseball purists it will always be Wrigley Field, regardless of what group buys the rights.

Im not changing my sports bucket list to say:

#8 Go see the Cubs play a home game at (corporate sponser) park/field.

Leave history alone!

I don't think it matters at all....I agree with Orangewilly, it will probably be yada-yada wrigley field...and everyone will call it wrigley field. My guess is that it wouldn't be a quality advertising investment with all that is involved.
