that is why I hate the term hate crime. Crime is crime and there should be the same penalty always. That being said the teacher who proposed this assignment should be reprimanded.

Hate crime legislation is stupid...I was being sarcastic. Why in the hell should the teacher be reprimaneded?

because it's obvious that her assignment is what pushed those kids to act completely out of character. They are normally good kids but the message in the sign was just too much for them to be expected to accept.

Somebody, whoever it was, that is responsible for the "and told she could not call her parents" part would NOT enjoy talking to me if I was one of said parents.

Because the teacher had these kids make pro or con signs about a hotly contested topic here in America right now. Especially in places like Texas. She should be able to teach the topic but the assignment could and did cause tensions in the school.

The teacher just said pick an issue, she did not select it. Teacher needs to be reprimanded for nothing here. Places of education are where "hot" issues should certainly be allowed to be discussed.

This makes me sick. Two things. First, public schools, in general, are horrible.
Second, whoever she asked permission to leave the school grounds and said no, should be fired. They basically fed her to the wolves.

Still doesn't change the fact that her 1st amendment rights and her personal safety were violated because she was following the instructions her teacher gave her.

I would say this is poor logic except I don't see any logic at all. I guess her parents are also to blame for making her go to school.

Her personal safety was violated because there are apparently people that attend this school that have a problem with free speech.

the irony here is so overwhelming. a class about free speech and the kid gets her ass whipped by some kids who are probably not even citizens. sometimes I just want to go postal. and the whole hate crime thing is a touchy feely thing that came about 30 years too late and only made the tolerance levels deeper and wider between races.
