Happy New Year’s Eve! Just thought I’d pose a few questions and observations as we move into a new year.

1. WCBB Parity… are we there yet? Or, is the balance we’re seeing so far due to COVID protocols and injuries?
- Looking at the scope of things from my perspective is that anyone in top 15ish can win it all this year. I don’t see a for-sure front runner.

2. WHO
GOT NEXT to
to win a Natty!?
- Kellie
- A. Barnes
- Joni Taylor
- Nicki Collen
- ???

3. What’s taking these OG - coaches so long to win it all, or again?
- Brenda Freeze
- K. Mulkey
- Geno
- Dawn
- Jeff
- Wes Moore
- Kelly Graves (what happened to these guys?)

I’m pretty sure there are a few more quality coaches I could add to the list but, these are the more popular ones. #JMO

Parity looks a lot closer this season than any other. It may be because of all the covid returnees to some extent, but you better bring your A game against everyone that includes some mid-majors you play. A lot of upsets this season by mid-majors over power five and other major teams.

Kellie can win one if she can recruit a little better and fill some positions with more scoring while maintaining defense. If Rae and Jordan Horston both get back and stay healthy the rest of the season. I give us a decent shot of making a final four this season. If you get there anything can happen.

Any of those could win this year, but not all of them can. The talent of two or three teams is basically even then you have three or four more that are just a step below. Oregon had a multitude of injuries this season when they all get back they will be a dangerous team. WCBB is no longer a place where you have a huge talent advantage over any other team so there are many teams that can win the title. You expect that one of the coaches on the list will have the team that will win it this season. I am hoping that the winner is a coach named Kellie Harper.

I think the covid protocols, returning players, talented high schoolers deciding to stay closer to home, and coaching turnover have all had an influence on greater parity. Although I think there are about 5-8 teams outside of the usual cast of top teams that can threaten, or if not win a championship, the top team are who there are, teams built for a championship. I do think this LV team can reach the S16 or E8 based on the roster alone providing everyone is healthy and playing to full potential. Can we make the F4, yes, but several things will have to fall our way, but we should never rely on such things. Coach Harper and staff is right where I thought they would be at present, a top 10-15 team. They have built a team with great chemistry, who plays for each other. Our recruiting is smart and solid, but not yet elite. Beating top teams, and deep playoff runs will help in this regard. If there is anything that I feel we need to take a step forward on is player development from a strength and conditioning stand point, 3pt. shooting, and our offensive philosophy. But, if we want get back to what we once were, the premier program in women's college basketball, we have to stack elite classes upon elite classes, or make top players elite through development. Finally, we have a good coach with a good staff, but I don't know that we have an identity as a program as of yet.

Excellent summary of where we are, big picture. I think our ID as a program is emerging: Big, long physical team built for defense, rebounding, and scoring in the paint. I would like to see more running and scoring in transition to that as an offensive philosphy/identity. I don't know if you can really develop 3 point shooters, I think they have to have a certain minimum amount of innate talent for that. Rae Burrell is the only one I can think of on this team that really has the talent to shoot threes. Pissott will help, too. If we have at least one of those on the court at any time, that will help the inside game.

Puckett has the talent to shoot 3s imo.
