I'm wanting to have a custom BBQ smoker built for home use and I'm looking for ideas. Anyone have any pictures or ideas you would like to share? This is what I have in mind so far.

Google UDS (ugly drum smoker). They made from a 55 galling drum. Many of them are not so ugly. Just finished mine. Trying it out for the first time tomorrow.

Just make sure to use at least quarter inch steel all the way around and fully weld each joint. Horizon makes a good horizontal offset if you want a point of reference.

I did a test run to season the drum. The worst that could happen is the drum tip over and make a mess. The cord is a thermocouple plugged into my multimeter. I have a nice wireless thermometer on order but couldn't wait.

It is also only running 225 degrees. The coals are obviously hotter than that but overall we are talking about relatively low temperatures

How much different/harder is it to use a smoker compared to a grill?

Different cuts of meat require different approaches to cooking. Things like pork shoulders and beef briskets have lots of interconnective fat and tissue that melt down and deliver amazing flavor when cooked slowly. Smoking accomplishes this by indirectly supplying heat and using different types of wood to add flavor. It requires careful control of temperature and patience to be great. Grilling is usually direct over heat source cooking with much higher temperatures. I would say that experience, finesse, and the quality of the source meat are the biggest factors to grilling.
