The new deal will pay him $10.5 million in 2022 and top out at $12.5 million in 2031, the final year of the deal. The total value of the contract is $115 million, averaging $11.5 million per season.

Clemson AD is in a pinch. In todays recruiting, you HAVE to have a well established coach. At this point in the game, clemson athletics could dive without one.... at least that's what I assume they are thinking.

Weird. They go into the buyout details but I didn't see a mention of whether the entire thing was guaranteed?

Either way, it's a huge chunk of change.

Good. They might regret this. He caught lightning in a bottle, a lot to do with Tennessee incompetence. Not sold he can stand the test of time.

I'm not sure I would call a 6-year run where he won the national title 2x, played in the national game two other times, and finished in the top 4 in the AP every single year "lightning in a bottle." He's no Coach O.

While he no doubt has benefited from Tennessee incompetence with some recruits, he's been more a beneficiary of general ACC incompetence, particularly at FSU.

His show got started when Kiffin told TBoyd to take a hike. Without Boyd, I doubt they sign Watson and we all know the stupidity of the Lawrence recruitment. The ACC is very weak and they'll be a national contender for awhile but the expansion of the playoffs is worse for them than it is most schools.

They probably don't get Lawrence without Watson, but it isn't like Tajh Boyd was an all-world QB. He was good, but they were still very much in their "Clemsoning" days when Boyd was there. They would lose a game or two a year they shouldn't which kept them out of ACC or national title contention, and Dabo had a Gus Malzahn-type "always near the hot seat" thing going on, which didn't go away until they made the title game with Watson then won it the next year.
