Dabo to the NFL in 2021?

He'd be an idiot to take the Jacksonville job, or probably any NFL job. Would he even be making any more money? The salaries for top NFL coaches and top college coaches are basically equivalent at this point.

Plus, Dabo strikes me as the quintessential college coach. Great recruiter and motivator, hokey/folksy, not the strongest Xs and Os guy.

I agree with both points, but sometimes ego overpowers good sense. Others are motivated by the challenge. Who knows what he will do.

He cant use NFL players like he does college kids
I don't think it's because of that - NFL coaches "use" NFL players too (they'll cut you loose the minute they think you aren't useful to the team anymore).

I think it's more of an issue of Dabo not being a great Xs and Os coach. Dabo (along with 95% of the other college coaches) doesn't win because he sits in a war room with his staff and players all week and comes up with an awesome gameplan that out-schemes the competition. Dabo and most college coaches win in large part because they're able to recruit and develop players that are more talented than their competition. IMO, the college coaching skillset is totally different from an NFL skillset.

Wee Little Nicky did not do so well in the NFL.
NFL players do no respond well to coaches that they do not respect.
Dabo's golly gee whiz act will not work. Not sure what would help Jax.
College is about Jimmies and Joes. The team that buys the best talent wins.
NFL is about Xs and Os. The draft and salary cap levels the field.

I don't know if the outcome would have been altogether different, but I would love to see what would have happened with Saban and the Dolphins if they were able to sign Drew Brees.

He may also tire of the 24/7/365 recruiting grind.
Coaches got to have a product the bag men can sell.

The little dwarf dictator would never gain respect from a NFL team.
Nor could he ever be second fiddle to the owner, NFL owners are very rich men with huge egos that require continuous worship from their staff. That doesn't sound like wee nicky to me.

I think that Saban is probably OK with being second fiddle to an owner but probably not a GM. He definitely would want at least a say in, if not outright control, of the roster. After a couple years in Miami I think he was discovering he didn't have that, and then Alabama offered him a raise to return to college where he had already been successful anyway, so it was a no-brainer to go back to college.

He went back with total control. That was made very clear.
Bear's boy and the gang had to give up control of the day to day operation.
I never thought that would happen at the University of Alabama.
Of coarse they still control the UA system.

Saban is really fortunate he turned Alabama around as quickly as he did. I know they supposedly offered him assurances before he took the job that he'd have control, but you know if by end of year 2/year 3 he wasn't competing for hardware, they would have started trying to sink their hooks into him.

The kind of money HCs make, that's true everywhere. Gotta win fast or be gone. But you are correct, at Bama you gotta win NCs. Maybe the gild is off the lily with Saban. I would not be surprised that they are looking. I still think it will be Kirby. Dabo just doesn't seem a fit. Who else is out there right now do you think they talk to?

Gild is off the lily with Saban? No way. At least not yet. He's just 1 season removed from a national title appearance and 2 removed from a title. He'd need a couple more seasons like last year before they told him to retire.

As far as who replaces him, I honestly don't know because I don't think Dabo or Kirby will go there. Alabama's first 2 calls have to be to those 2 guys for due diligence purposes; it'd be management malpractice to not ask them if they wanted the job, but I don't see why either of them would go there at this point, especially Dabo. Kirby is already at home and would likely match any Alabama offer. If Dabo hadn't won a national title yet, I think he'd take the Alabama job in a heartbeat. However, given the fact he's already won 2 at Clemson, is a god there, has an easier path to the CFP there, and they'll pay him whatever he wants, I don't think he'll leave.

I could see Lincoln Riley (especially if he hasn't won a title at Oklahoma yet) or Jimbo taking the job. If Pruitt has won an SEC title at Tennessee and proven himself more, I could see him taking the job.

I don‘t see Kirby leaving his alma mater either. Why would you do that? You’d basically be conceding that you‘re not good enough to win at your school, which is supposed to be a place that is set up to win from the get go. You just don’t leave your school which could/should be competing for a title every 4 years.

It would be pretty funny to see Jimbo leave A&M for Bama and hear the Bama fans make Bear comparisons. I’m wondering if Lincoln will have his eyes set on the NFL after seeing the success of a young coach like a Sean McVeigh or Kliff Kingsbury have had.

I’ll throw a name out there, probably a long shot, Mario Cristobal. He‘s been there, he was a great recruiter there and he believes in a similar type of philosophy as Saban. He may not be the top choice, but I think it would be possible.

I could totally see Cristobal, especially if he keeps it up at Oregon.

If you look at the odds, I see most of these guys as either "no" (Dabo, Kirby, Urban) or "hell no" (Dantonio, Muschamp, Carroll, Stoops).

Pruitt is on there as 6/1, but he has a lot more proving of himself to do before Alabama would even consider him, IMO. I could see Riley, but as you said he'll also have NFL overtures and might not want to enter a hornet's nest that he has no personal ties to. At this point Jimbo might be the most likely.

Saban already holds that title and he’s done it in a more difficult conference.
Saban holds that title today. If Dabo won 4 more titles (yuuuge if) he'd at least be in the conversation for greatest of all time.

Dabo is only 50 and already has 2 national titles and 130 wins. When Saban was 50, he had no national titles and 61 wins.
