Looking To 2009: Georgia is off to the fastest start for 2009. The Bulldogs already have five commitments.
Alabama has the biggest commitment - D. J. Fluker, a 6-7, 325-pound defensive tackle from Biloxi, Miss.
Colby Berna, a starting offensive tackle on Fayetteville's state championship team, has committed to the Razorbacks. He was one of only two juniors to make the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's All-Arkansas team.
Arkansas got another early commitment from cornerback Darius Winston, who is credited with running 40 yards in 4.38 seconds.
Florida has a commitment from Greg Reid (5-9, 170 pounds) of Valdosta, Ga.
He can play a number of positions, including quarterback, running back and cornerback. He also returned punts and kickoffs for Lowndes High School's state championship team.
Mississippi State has a commitment from Chris Garrett, a 6-4, 220-pound quarterback from Tupelo, Miss.

It's the new trend in recruiting. Start way early. We need to pick up on this trend or you'll be right, we will get left behind. I really don't think its going to matter much. Until this staff does something to change the national perception of tennessee football. Look for this trend to continue.

I read where UGA only has 14 scholarships to give out next year unless somebody leaves early.

We do need to get started now!

thank you officer. Im so thankful for the thread police. This info just came out, the other thread pertained to the monster class USC already has committed.

Wish we had some early commits. It will be interesting to see how well this new staff can recruit.

After the 2006 season, Tennessee had 4 commits to the 2008 class. Look how this one turned out.

this looks to be a decent year in-state, so let's get it started and lock 'em in

Simmer down. The '08 class dust has just settled and we're already worked up about '09. Everyone knows everything can change depending on a teams performance this fall. So instead of worrying about our commits, let's worry about Chavis resurrecting the defense and Clawson bringing some spark (and interest from recruits) to the offense. Add those to Fulmer's usual recruiting rhetoric and we will be just fine.

To top it off, how many commits de-commit (and multiple times at that). If UT proves themselves on the field, all will be OK. We battled a new staff, a volatile team (blowout losses to SEC East champs) and some poorly timed off field incidents. That won't happen again this year.

Guess what those kids still have a year to play. Anything can happen. They could boom or bust.

Chances are if Clawson brings a new spark to our Offense and we get a lot of eyes we may bring in an awesome class. Our secondary is going to be un real next year.

You mentioned UGA in the other post too. Why are you always trying to get everyone to see that UT isn't what it used to be and always try to be so negative? Or maybe you don't try?

People talk about the 85 scholarship limit, but it's not like this is an impenetrable barrier. Yesterday, Doug Matthews commented on Big Orange Sunday that if UTK could've obtained 25 commits from highly rated prosepcts then they would've found a way to take them all. Maybe that means placing a few guys, cutting some dead weight and getting guys who qualify for another scholarship (academic, athletic, or otherwise) off of the football scholarship count. Obviously, there is going to be a limit to how far a school can take it but the 85 limit but it is not such a hard number as we sometimes seem to think it is.

we're in a hole and behind every year due to the fact that this is tennessee and the D-1 level players are not as easy to come by in state as it is in others

Just to put a face on it as I type this there appears to be 20 players committed on the Rivals Top 100 list. It should (note "should") come as little surprise that 19 of those 20 are staying in-state. The one exeption is #49, a LB from KY headed to OSU.
