I am sure that this thread will be moved to the "Around the NCAA" forum but, given his long history with Tennessee's football program, I wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate David Cutcliffe for being named the Walter Camp Foundation National Coach of the Year today (Duke coach David Cutcliffe named Walter Camp National Coach of the Year | Campus Union - SI.com). Cutcliffe is also a finalist for the Maxwell Coach of the Year award.

Martin Rickman, who crafted this press release, stated that "Chances are [that Cutcliffe will] release a similar statement [of appreciation] after winning an even more prestigious award on Thursday. Cutcliffe has Duke bowl eligible for the second straight year for the first time since 1988 and ’89, and he has sent two different quarterbacks to the NFL since being hired in Durham on Dec. 15, 2007."

Way to go Coach cut - you are one of my all time favorite coaches. The best QB coach in the business and great OC as well. Now it looks like he has become a great head coach as well. He's got Duke looking good this year.

I've watched Duke play a few times this season. They have a great scheme and have had a few breaks go their way. But this is proof that if you play to your strengths. Stick to your game plan. Still a few surprise talents that may have gotten over looked at better schools. You can win. He is a hell of a coach. I was one of the many who thought he should have got the UT job. Best wishes in your bowl game. And my condolences against Florida State prison.

Here is an interesting tidbit which underscores the phenomenal job Coach Cutcliffe has done resurrecting the Duke football program: "The three years before Cutcliffe arrived in Durham, Duke had won 2 games combined. After a 2-2 start this year, Duke has rattled off 8 wins in a row and have a chance to shock the world against the Seminoles. Regardless of the outcome, Cutcliffe is richly deserving of this award" (Duke's David Cutcliffe named Walter Camp Coach of the Year - FanSided - Sports News, Entertainment, Lifestyle & Technology - 240+ Sites).

It takes time to build a program. This is Cut's sixth season at Duke and the first time he's recorded a winning record.

I'm thrilled to see him doing well this year and will be pulling for the miracle upset this weekend.

It is very exciting for all of those involved with Duke University. It's even better for me, who grew up in this town as a Duke fan, and made some good friendships with guys on the UT staff while in school, who then went with Cut to Duke. The affection that all those guys have for UT is something great to share, especially Cut. I have been around him a handful of times and I have to say that I really believe that he would like to do great things at Tennessee. I mean only Tennessee, there is a very soft spot in his heart for us. Duke is a wonderful fit for him at this point and I hope he finishes his career in Durham.

I will be traveling to Charlotte this weekend for the game and I know it will take a miracle for Duke to win, but being there for a guy like Coach Cut is important to me. He's made a great impact in this community and Duke Athletics as a whole. Helluva guy.

I believe I heard this afternoon that this year Duke went 6-2 in the ACC. In the previous 8 years they won 9 combined ACC games. Coach Cut is a good one

great post

I appreciate it, I've been very lucky to be a part of some great things in the college sports world that have directly to do with people like David Cutcliffe, Phillip Fulmer and Coach K. As close as I am with Duke and the many people I work with, grew up with and let's say glad hand with, nothing will ever be as special as my time on The Hill. I grew up in Cameron Indoor Stadium and went to college in Neyland Stadium. Not many can say that. To me they are the best venues in college sports.

It's been weird going to Duke games this season because it's always about just tailgating, getting drunk and hanging out with friends. The last month or so stuff got real and there was an edge going to a game. Before Vols games I start pacing and getting really antsy several hours before kickoff, I actually was doing that last weekend before the UNC game and I was there. It's really a new found phenomena around these parts, but kind of neat to see people embrace it.

I know that in my incredibly brief tenure at Duke in the early seventies, the football program was a source of endless amusement. Bleachers only on the sidelines, open hills at the endzones with clouds of non-tobacco smoke wafting into the air, dogs running around during games catching Frisbees. When we played NC State I learned the cheer "If you can't go to college, go to State!" (thump, thump)

Sincere congrats to Coach Cut for making Duke football relevant again.
