I know lots of folks are watching the changes in conferences/alignment… and whether or not our Conference should pick up some new members to “keep up” with the changes.

MSN

As for me, I’ll always be a VFL whatever happens. But, if the conference wants to expand more to keep up then I really do think all of the conferences should just go ahead and immediately fire all of the conference administrate staff now (to include Sankey and everyone on SEC conference staff) as they are all just unnecessarily diluting the payoff to each of the schools. There could easily be a singular staff to arrange media rights for those universities that actually attract viewers (thankfully UT is part of this group) without unnecessarily expend precious dollars on multiple staffs who are not really doing anything to preserve the so-called “status qou.”

If that report from the PAC-12 is correct, those remaining University Presidents should surely immediately fire everyone in their Conference offices.

While I have enjoyed being in the SEC since attending UT many years ago, what happening now is not really what I grew up with. I’m open to change though…. frankly, I don’t have any affinity or affection for any other “SEC team.” I get no satisfaction from getting beat by Georgia now (or Alabama, Florida in past).

If indeed we’re going into this brave new world driven by deals/money, then it’s surely time to toss off the unnecessary costs of maintaining multiple “conference” administrative expenses when they really don’t add much value.

The “Power T” is thankfully a greatly superior Brand than some silly SEC conference affiliation.

Go VOLS!

The SEC was born in the Andrew Johnson building less than a mile from Neyland Stadium. Tennessee is the SEC.

I do recognize that, but direction now may be a different thing than Andy Jackson envisioned as “Manifest Destiny.” Or perhaps I’m actually seeing what Old Hickory saw?

Yeaaaaaah, I mean, I am all Vol, but until the "Power T" can pull a 3 billion dollar ten year contract out of the mouse's butt, I'd probably cool it on the "we don't need the SEC" nonsense.

I believe you have the tail wagging the dog. The SEC isn't expanding to keep up with the other conferences. The other conferences are expanding to try to keep up with the SEC. The SEC is the premier conference and that has led to increased revenue. Everyone else is desperately trying to keep up. Sankey has publicly stated that the SEC has no interest in expanding after Texas and Oklahoma. They don't need to expand any more, and Sankey knows that. Firing Sankey would be like Apple firing Steve Jobs after the introduction of the iPhone 1.

To clarify further (why I titled the thread “Decision time for SEC” is that it has been reported Oregon/Washington are going to Big 10 (now appears to be Big 18) and Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah are waiting to join the Big 12 (soon to be 16).
The decision for the SEC is whether or not to make counter-move (e.g. swoop in and grab some ACC teams as example).
If so (and intent is to remain “on top” by collecting some more marquee brands from those eager to re-align), I was suggesting that why not go all in now and just bypass this Game of Thrones drama.
I looked it up… Sankey makes $3.7M and his staff collectively makes a little more. If CFB is heading to a NFL model, I’d rather UT just get the roughly $1m/year back into it’s coffers than some staff in Birmingham.

You are picking at a rounding error....

What’s made the NFL so strong is the revenue sharing on TV deals. Dallas brings more to the table than Titans, Pittsburgh brings more than Houston, Green Bay brings more than San Diego, yet they share the TV package equally. Sad to see college football destroy itself with a few conferences grabbing the majority of the money. Next step will be the bigger schools wanting more inside their own conference. The competitive balance will be destroyed.

SEC will be one of the last conferences standing and will be a huge money maker. I don’t necessarily like the road we’re on to just a few “Super Conferences”, but I don’t have any say so in it. College football is nothing but big business now. Always has been a business, but there was a time when it was pure with the smaller regional conferences that had really good football like the SWC and Big 8. Still love it, but not a fan of these changes. I’ll miss how it used to be.

Those 3 each left willing due to their lack of desire/ability to compete. Today is about chasing money, TV money exclusively.
They may have left willingly, but two of them would have been shown the door in due time.

Yes, I'm aware there's money at stake in all this.

The SEC has never been one to react to other conferences. The SEC has always been the conference that was innovative and at the front of the line. From divisions, to conference title games to expanding its footprint the SEC has been the lead dog. I don’t think that has changed. This all spun out of control because the B1G was insecure after Oklahoma and Texas decided they wanted to come to the SEC. The dominoes started to fall after that, and then the ACC big brands realized that they are getting left behind by these other conferences, including the Big 12. There really isn’t a move for Sankey to make right now anyway . ESPN doesn’t have the $$ to make moves and it really doesn’t have a stable home . Maybe Apple? Amazon? We’ll see. FSU seems to be the only ACC team that is hell bent on leaving and there’s no way the SEC will pay for them to leave bc honestly, the juice really isn’t worth the squeeze with them. Sankey will be calculated. Despite all the hoopla, the B1G’s assortment of teams still isn’t better the SEC’s.
