I've been thinking about this. Does Crompton really need that much time to go deep? Why not forget the play action and have Crompton line up under center (or not) take a 3 step drop and launch it deep. I'm sure Nuke has the speed to make that work. No?

Obviously there is something wrong with this because the coaches would have figured out a way to do it, but I don't know why this can't be tried at least a couple of times in the game. If done on third down it would be the same as a short punt if picked off. Just something to keep the defense honest. I think that and short passes is all we have. Swing passes to the RB, roll-outs to FB or TE, and a couple of deep passes. Right now our offense is run plays and short passes. Why not a deep one every once in awhile?

I've already given up that anything in the 10-20 yard range will be an INT or end up in the stands.

EDIT: Not sure why this didn't end up in the main forum.

Wow.. im getting tired.. for some reason I thought thread said "Deep Throat"

Ya I agree.. we should let Nuke try some deep routes.. I guess they are afraid JC will under throw him..

First thing wrong about your scenario is that you need a 5 or 6 step drop for long passes and an extra couple of seconds. Three step drops are for quick hitting plays such as quick outs or slants. Second thing, never use third down as a punt. Even if the pass gets intercepted 40 yards downfield it could be returned and worse yet it changes the momentum of the game and fires up the defense much more than a punt. But keep thinking........ I am sure you will come up with the right answers. :)

I agree with some kind of deep pass every once in a while just to keep defense honest. if nuke does get jammed at the line against Ohio then he will never get open against an SEC defense. This needs to be a game that makes Auburn, Georgia and rest of SEC want to prepare for us and not just put 8 in the box and make JC beat them. I think we can afford some wildcat plays and trickory this week.

It is quite a bit more complex than that. There's a good article up on GVX now talking about the passing game. Jones mentions that the receivers have been losing their route discipline in games. He says they do it right in practice but then lose focus in front of a crowd.

Maybe that's why CLK isn't in a hurry to change QB's. If they really are running bad routes then it doesn't matter who is in there because the passing game is going to stink.

Deep routes aren't just about speed. Virtually no WR has the ability to just blow by SEC CB's. Even to the extent it is about speed, it isn't about 40 times. It is about top end speed. A great 40 doesn't hurt but you need that top end speed more.

Richardson can get off with his quickness but they can also put him in motion to avoid getting jammed.

Teague is actually the guy I think can develop into a nice deep threat. He's bigger than Nuke without giving up much if anything in top end speed.

I'd also like to see Moore re-emerge from his injury and play up to his potential. He hauled in some nice long throws last fall but has disappeared this year.

I think this is actually a pretty reasonable idea. If you remember from last season, some of JC's best throws were when he just chucked it downfield to a guy on a fly pattern. It requires less thinking & moving through WR progressions on his part. (Less of JC thinking = good)

Plus, when they intercept the pass, its just like a punt, right?:good!:

It's not only a "not enough time" issue. Even if JC had killer protection, accuracy and decision-making seem to be a problem. Understatement? LOL

On the planned deep route that this post is talking about...the only read he has to make is whether the safety will be in position or not.

I agree about taking a shot...even shots such as deep outs when we are constantly seeing man to man....I know Crompton is struggling...but the fact that we are taking no down field shots in man is more of a reflection on our wr's imo. I think that this week we will see much more down field passing.
