Defense & Special Teams - It's About Coaching

We have had 5 different defensive co-ordinators here in the last 6 years. Chavis, Kiffin, Wilcox, Sunseri, and Jancek. If we had some players, any of them would probably suffice.

Sunseri is a good example. Came from doing very well at Alabama with the top defense in the nation to dead last in the NCAA with our players; moved on to FSU and has one of the top defenses in the nation once again. Granted hes not the DC at those schools but the glaring difference is the talent level, speed and depth he's coaching at those schools.

Help is on the way and until CBJ has three full recruiting classes, it's still a project.

not giving up on the team, but anyone who thinks this team is being prepared and coached up... Especially the defense and even special teams today... Needs to open their eyes.

They are not learning some of the basic fundamentals of football (e.g. Angles, coverage, positioning) and that has nothing to do with talent... It's coaching.
team speed or lack thereof. Now move on

I believe we have good coaches that are very good teachers. I don't agree that everything falls on coaching especially when, as many have said, it's gotten worse the last three weeks. Did the coaches make them unlearn things they were taught that worked previously? Doubt it.

I believe a HUGE factor in this is our depth and the amount of time our defense is on the field because we don't have a high powered or even remotely consistent play on offense.

Our kids are exhausted which would explain the fall off over the last three games.
If I work you out until muscle failure and then bring in the greatest coach on the planet to teach you the proper technique for a push up your body will not be able to perform it regardless of how good you're being taught.

Auburn had the ball 8 minutes in the first half... How tired could they be?

What are you saying PV? That they learned this in Pop Warner but now have forgotten about it?

A good coach could take special teams with a bunch of players no faster than 4.6 and do a better job than our special teams did today.

I doubt anyone on Vol special teams can run an electronically timed 4.6.

Wilcox did suffice... would take him back no problem. The others (except Chavis) have failed.

How is washingtons defense doing? It's pretty hard to judge a staff based on 9 games. When we have zero depth.

I doubt you actually know anything about football. Ill trust those who have played at a high level or coached.

Exactly. Hand times vs electronic times are way different.

It's lazy to just blame coaching. Any rational fan knew this year would be a struggle. Obviously coaching can get better but come on.

That can go either way, I could say it's lazy to blame team speed. What does team speed have to do with our defensive tackles making no plays, getting no push? What about our linebackers inability to shed a block A GLARING ISSUE THE PAST THREE WEEKS? What does team speed have to do with the safeties not being able to find the ball? Sure if Randolph and McNeil were faster they might be able to recover from their mistakes, but the mistakes have occurred the past two weeks.

On offense, where is the imagination? Auburn is a bad defensive team versus the pass. Yet, even down 21 points, no shots down field. I don't know how fast North or Howard or Croom are, but certainly they aren't slow, why can't they get separation? Again, been happening for weeks, sure they catch a few balls, but they aren't getting separation at the top of their routes.

It's easy to blame team speed. It's easy to blame coaching. I don't see a lot of people blaming execution...It's everything folks, everything.

I would hope no one would suggest that Malzahn inherited a worse program, that's silly. Still, Malzahn is maximizing what he has, and they looked slow and terrible last year. The question is simple, are the UT coaches getting the max out of this team?

Already having given up a punt return and kickoff return for a TD, they then proceeded to have Palardy pooch a kickoff to an intermediate receiver, who promptly danced a light fandango around and thru our Special Needsters who bumped into each other trying to evade him. Which 10 of them managed to do, save Palardy who is fast becoming our leading tackler on the team.:shaking2:

Watch it! Your on dangerous ground here. Questioning the staff or even remotely suggesting that they may not be doing the best job will get your intelligence questioned.

Yes God forbid anyone should question, criticize or critique the "Best Coaching Staff in America".

I am so tired of hearing that you can't "coach up" these players because of 3 years of Dooley. That is such an ignorant statement that is laughable. Regardless of the level of talent on the field for the Vols, they are not showing that they are well-coached. A team does not have to be made up of 4 and 5 star players to be well coached!!!!! Truth be told, this team has regressed.

Really? No way anyone can say that Stanford has a defense that can match up with Orgeons speed on offense. Yet they did just that with a much slower defense. As it has been stated many times by many pundits, Stanfords defense is not the fastest, but they are well coached and play FUNDAMENTLLY sound defense. Guess where that comes from? Yep, Coaching.

I think Jacques Smith purposely running into a brick wall then the defense dog piling the wrong guy pretty much sums everything up.

I don't believe that one needs to be a barber to recognize a bad haircut. For whatever reason, Tennessee's defense has gone straight downhill since the departure of Wilcox, Sirmon, Thompson, etc. It was decent, not great, in 2010 and 2011. It has been a disaster since.

So, if a kid is coached properly to play assignment football and then fails to do so during the game, it's the coaches' fault? The players have no culpability? Do your kids and dogs do everything you've taught them perfectly every time? Consistent mistakes are borne of bad habits. Will take this staff a while to break the bad habits and instill new good habits.
