To rate individual players is most difficult when the concept is team defense. For example if the game plan is to require a player to be "defensed" into the middle and the LV doesn't - we the fans don't know about the failure.
Similarly, we don't know when they change defenses or whether a player has defended her assigned role correctly in a 2-3 trap. Some things are as obvious as a football safety who got beat deep when the assigned player doesn't break soon enough in transition, or attempts a steal and slips.
So, how do fans with excellent to fair knowledge of defense determine if a defensive breakdown is the fault of the player or the team? The LVs have had a number of good offensive guards who could not move laterally fast enough to prevent the baseline drive. And that kept them off the floor,
The person who guards the point guard is the most visible defender as well as the player who is suppose to prevent an offensive player from having touches. Steals is a visible defensive positive.
I felt Carter played excellent defense as she matched up well with most point guards. Issy was a very active post and when she controlled against fouls she was quite good. And after that this writer does not claim to have sufficient knowledge or desire to "rate' individual players.
