Couldn't sum this up better than a well-respected, knowledgeable person did on the scout board.

"Someone said they wanted to see the ice defense of the ballscreen diagrammed. Here's some screen captures.

First, a successful ball screen. First play of the game, Wannamaker gets the ball and McGhee picks for him:

Wannamaker turns the corner, BW tries to help but is a step late and Wannamaker scores.

Just a few possessions later, they try it again. But this time someone calls the play to Scotty, or else he feels it coming on his own...in any case, he goes to the "ice" defense:

See how high Scotty is playing this time? This is to force Wannamaker to his right and away from the ball screen. Now watch what happens:

Wannamaker has nowhere to go. He can't drive right or forward, as that would be 1 v. 3. He can't go left, since Scotty is there. What actually happens is that McGhee gives up on the plan and tries to backdoor BW. But BW recovers, Wannamaker picks up his dribble, and passes it back to the PG.

There you go, the "ice" defense. Really just amounts to disallowing the pick in the first place."

Beautiful game plan!

excellent breakdown brother.... i like it when we can all learn a little about the coaching aspect... i was wondering at the time if this is something new bruce had practiced for this game... i was wondering why they were forcing him to his right... thought he might just be left handed
