Homosexuals and single mothers should not be allowed to teach. I imagine that the theory with homosexuals is that students who are borderline might think its okay to be gay since they see a teacher who is. And in that respect we get into the whole is it inherent or chosen debate.

But single mothers? A good teacher is married and has children and gets divorced or widowed and she can't teach anymore? That seems a little too 1907, even for this board.

I hadn't heard this, I'd like to see a link and see if this is accurate given context.

Link? Proof?

I do agree with your statement that it is crazy, although I have to be honest while sexual orientation has no bearing on my kid learning the R's. The only thing I wish all teachers of all walks of life would learn: keep your personal views and morality out of the classroom.

you don't believe it? There have to be "real consequences" to statements like this (true or not)

TRENDING: DeMint takes heat for gays, unwed moms comment
By:
CNN's Alexander Mooney and Peter Hamby
(CNN) – A spokesman for Sen. Jim DeMint tells CNN the South Carolina Republican was merely stating his position that school boards should be in control of hiring decisions when the senator reportedly said Saturday that gays and unwed mothers should be banned from teaching.
"Senator DeMint believes that hiring decisions at local schools are a local school board issue, not a federal issue. He was making a point about how the media attacks people for holding a moral opinion," a spokesman for DeMint said Tuesday.
Speaking at a church rally in Spartanburg, South Carolina, DeMint told attendees people quietly told him he should not back down from a position he took in 2004 that openly gay individuals and single mothers who are involved in a sexual relationship should not be allowed to teach. He did not weigh in on whether unwed men should be allowed to teach.

"(When I said those things,) no one came to my defense," he said, according to the Spartanburg Herald-Journal. "But everyone would come to me and whisper that I shouldn't back down. They don't want government purging their rights and their freedom to religion."
DeMint, who faces an easy Senate re-election battle against Democratic candidate Alvin Greene, has become a king-maker in conservative circles, backing many candidates in the GOP primaries who defeated candidates supported by establishment Republicans.
Responding to DeMint's comments, the Republican organization GOProud said, “Jim DeMint is doing his best to make Alvin Greene look sane.”
“Jim DeMint’s comments can only be described as outrageous and bizarre," said Christopher R. Barron, Chairman of the GOProud Board. "The idea that someone who says they believe in limited government would support the government weeding out gay teachers and unmarried sexually active female teachers simply defies logic.”

I missed the qualifier on single Moms. He is agaisnt them only if they are sexually active. Doesn't say how he would find that out.

However, if the local board doesn't want to hire them? Who is the Fed to say no? I do agree with that part of it. But ya if he really did say those, he should know he will come out looking like a fool.

Digging up old quotes. And after apologizing and clarifying he gets elected by SC. I guess digging up this quote stings the SC Dems for allowing good ol' Alvin to win the nomination. If they're going to rehash old quotes already vetted, why allow such a guy as he?

You act as though the fact that he got reelected despite the comments must mean that a majority of ther voters support those opinions. You also act as though if a majority believe it correct, then it must be correct.

Neither conclusion is logically justified.

Moreover, the line he is now spewing of, "well, I am not necessarily saying I believe this to be true, I'm just pointing out that the issues presented are local issues" is a tired olf fake curtain you stand behind when you do want to be identified with the comment by some, but have a plausible excuse to disavow them when criticized.

Like I say, the one that really surprised me was the one about single mothers. I mean, if they start dating or get engaged then they get penalized for that? Nuts.

I don't 'act' like anything. You really have a tendency to read whatever you feel into anyone's comments don't you?

I find it quite humorous you've bought into the only strategy your party has to counter a pretty widespread, far-reaching movement around the country. You have no agenda. You have nothing to offer. No solutions. No fixes. You cannot even run on your so-called successes. You cannot look yourself in the mirror and offer why YOU are the candidate to make this country better, fix it, etc. etc. Instead the only strategy is to dig through your opponent's past and find some quotes, some business transaction, some photo with some distant handshake, a divorce paper, etc. to say why the other guy or gal is just flat out unfit for office. And that is the point here. What exactly is the reason to bring up a 6 year old quote LG? Any particular reason? The guy had to answer to it when it came out. He did then. The voters knew about it. Clearly the whole premise of bringing it up now is just apart of a grand Dem strategy. But since he had to account for it in the minds of voters then, what other purpose does it serve to bring it up now? If anything it shows a desperate party stooping to the lowest of lows, scratching and clawing its way to maintain power. If anything, it counters your whole "GOP is falling apart and divided". It really looks like the Dems are bankrupt and in need of a bailout.

I just find it ironic that someone who mocks talk radio for these sort of tactics comes on this board daily and does the same thing he attacks.

I have to say, I cannot recall a single incident in the news where a teacher was charged with or a student claimed he/she had been molested by a gay teacher. On the other hand, reports of heterosexual harrasment by teachers is pretty much once a week down here.

Wouldn't school vouchers provide those who opposed homosexual elementary school teachers with a means to dissent, without infringing upon the rights of the homosexual to teach wherever they wanted?

Haven't these been upheld by the USSC?
