I think this is more a matter of local politics than any indication of a national trend, but we shall see I suppose...

Let's see how the vote broke down before jumping to a conclusion about this being a referendum on the Ryan plan...

The last numbers I saw had the Democrat at 48% and the third party candidate at 8%. 48% is probably a good showing for a Democrat in that district, but more than anything it looks like another case of the Tea Party hanging out to dry a candidate that they deem a RINO.

Polls have shown that biggest issue, by far in this race, was REJECTION of the Ryan plan.

TP, we hardly knew ye ....

Not trying to be a smart-alec at all; just an observation. That's what they said when Scott Brown won the Kennedy seat. Then the 2010 elections shot that out of the water. It could get interesting nonetheless.

I'm still not sure that was as related as folks want it to be....a lot of people didn't like Coakley, based on what I heard there at the time. I think it gave momentum to what was to come...but I'm not sure the motivation to elect him was the same as the motivation that game later.

The "Tea Party" candidate is now up to 9%. I just read that the Tea Party actually endorsed the Republican, but the third party candidate got himself put on the ballot with the label Tea Party even though the party affiliation doesn't really exist. Sounds like a mess.

Fair enough. The 2012 elections will not be devoid of fireworks, that's for sure.

Well, it's my opinion...and I think it's a fair point to raise.

And, I agree...it will be a very interesting election cycle.

Wasn't the other "monumental" NY congressional special election that went Dem prior to the November massacre?

Wouldn't put much into this one.

I'm not seeing this as the Waterloo that some outlets/folks are declaring it to be. Not in the least.

These are the moments when I flip over to MSNBC to watch them pee their pants with glee. I think I've heard "Medicare killing Ryan plan" about 50 times, and the poll question on the Ed Shultz Show was "Do you think the GOP cares about you if you are in the middle class?" The No's won 96-4.

I put the media in the same boat as politicians. The best case scenario is that you take what they say with a grain of salt.

They were the same after that other special election in NY where a Dem won a traditional Rep seat. Then November 2010 happened a few months later...

MSNBC irks me almost as much as FNC.

Anywho, at 48% for the Dem I wouldn't call it a referendum on the Ryan plan, but perhaps a shift looking over the more recent election results. There was a shift, but not a monumental one.
