Depp-Riddler and Hoffman-Penguin Rumors Continue | Mania.com

It seems that the Johnny Depp as Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin rumors will never truly die down Maniacs. Just a few weeks after Warner Bros. executives said Nolan was on vacation and that there was no set story for a third Batman film, we now have those WB executives joking around with co-star Michael Caine, with this update sent in by Maniac Joeybaloney. Caine himself has passed along what was said to MTV and it's coming back full circle to the same actors possibly playing the same two characters in the third installment.

“They’ve already got them in mind,” said Caine, when asked who he’d like to see take up arms against the Caped Crusader. “It’s Johnny Depp as The Riddler. And The Penguin is Philip Seymour Hoffman. I read it in the paper.”

So Caine is like the rest of us, reading gossip in the tabloids, right? Except for one thing…according to the actor, he confirmed the news through the studio itself.
“When Christopher [Nolan] said we were going to do ‘The Dark Knight’ next, I didn’t what that meant in Batman terms,” related Caine, who plays Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth. “I said, ‘What’s the story?’ and he said The Joker. I said, ‘Oh, s–t! How are you going to top Jack [Nicholson]?’ He said, ‘Well, I’ve cast Heath Ledger. And I went ‘Ha! I couldn’t top Jack, but if anyone could, maybe Heath could.’ And he did.

“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘S–t, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs]

While Caine indeed reinforced these rumors, albeit with a humorous attitude, he did confirm that Nolan has yet to script anything out.

“No. He’s gone. He’ll come back with a script sometime.”

I'm pretty sure Nolan said he wouldn't do the penguin or the riddler???

He said it wouldn't be a grown man wearing a green question mark suit and a mutated dwarf penquin man.

The penquin in the comics is not a mutated dwarf.

Hoffman Responds to Riddler Rumors | Mania.com

“No one has talked to me about it ever — never,” replied Hoffman. “It happened, like, five years ago, too. It was a rumor back then and it’s still a rumor. [laughs] It’s just in the press. It’s funny.”

“I’m such a fan of those movies,” related Hoffman. “Comic book movies in general I look forward to — I am a real cheerleader for them. I want them to do well because those are terrific stories. As a kid I was a big comic book collector. What [Nolan]’s doing is taking it in a whole other exciting great place. I’m more a fan, so the interest of being in it isn’t that great. It’s more the interest in wanting to see the next one. It’s probably better that way.”
When further pressed for his level of interest if Warner Bros. approached him about the role, Hoffman said, “I don’t know. I think I’m more interested in seeing someone else do it. I don’t know if I’d be a good Penguin to be quite honest. [laughs]”

Thinking about the Batman movies I was thinking that James Franco would be a good replacement for Heath Ledger as Joker. I love the Hoffman idea as penguin. Johnny Depp could play any of the characters and it would be good.

Heath Ledger

With a little make-up they could have him looking like joker in no time. :good!:

Nolan series ends with the dark knight rises

So will they rebooting After The Dark Knight Rises?

I think the rumors are able to continue because someone continues to talk about them, also I think someone else said this could have been purposely created to find if peple find them favorable, or unfavorable.

I think Joe Pesci would be a better Penguin.

Nolan has said he would be open to being a producer on future films but he is done directing.

Depp as Riddler would have been terrible. In fact, I don't really like the Riddler or Penguin as movie villains. They are carbon copies of the Joker. Deranged masterminds. Boring. Raz Algul, Joker, and Bane are all very different.

Are you kidding me.
They aren't carbon copies of Joker, not even close.

Penguin is one of the few Batman rogues that is sane, and in control of his actions. Unlike the Joker he doesn't decide to announce his crimes of what he's going to do.
The Penguin knows how to cover his tracks, people underestimate him they don't think he's a threat, and when they find out they are wrong it's to late.
You know his real name, and his life before he became a Crime Boss in Gotham City.

The Riddler He's obssessed with Riddles puzzlers brain teasers, you also know his life before he Edward became the RIddler.
It was Cluemaster that copied Riddler's MO.

Joker is a Nihilist convinced that life is meaniless, wants people to also think that but mainly Batman, and does what is malicious so people will do something very regreable or to drive them insane.
Real name is unknown, he's told several versions of who he was before becoming the Joker.

How about Christian Slater as Joker? He seems just crazy enough to make that work.

Movies aren't made for die-hards. Only somebody really tapped into the comics will notice those subtle differences. Everybody else in the audience would be like, "This guy is like the Joker only annoying/not creepy." or something to that effect.

I'll disagree the audiences would think that.

The Penguin people would think more of Carmine Falcone except a guy that can fight, and looks abnormal.

The Riddler people might think seems like the Zodiac Killer except crimes that aren't murder. The Riddler wants to prove he is smarter than Gotham PD, Batman, and others.
I doubt Riddler is going to create a situation of the Social experiment like the Joker.
He's complusively honest, and a obsessive complusion of riddles. The Complusively honest is hugely opposite of the Joker who lied about where Rachel and Harvey Dent is by switching the addresses, possibly also lied about the detenator blows up the other boat, "I'm a man of my word." More crap, was able to find the mob the money burns his half but with all the money piled together the rest would burn. I can get the Bat another bunch of crap he didn't want to kill the Bat.
Also manipulated Harvey about having nothing to do with Harvey becoming burnt, and that he's not a man with a plan but instead a dog chasing a car he wouldn't know what do if he caught it.

The Joker of The Dark Knight wanted to prove a person could become as bad as him, create situations where there is no ideal outcome for Bats and Gotham PD, to test Batman to see if he is incorruptible.
He thinks people are secretly as bad as him, thinks anything that is shown otherwise is a facade. He used the two boats to prove this with the Prisoners, and Citizens.
Neither sides push the button on the detonator.
THe Raw Test of the capacity of others to commit unspeakable Crimes in their own self interest.
