Derek Dooley

3rd yr Head Coach -AND- Ath Dir at Louisiana Tech

Played WR at Univ of Virginia

Law degree from Univ of Georgia (gotta be fairly bright)

Helped (reccomended) Will Muschamp and Kirby Smart get coaching jobs with Nick Saban at LSU.

Evidently, after Will Muschamp rejected our offer he told Hamilton that Derek Dooley was the best coach out there right now. (I guess other than himself)

He was the recruiting coordinator at LSU and was able to pull in #1 ranked classes in 2001 and 2003.

Dooley will be a good coach for us. In about 4 years, he will be a GREAT coach for us.
He has a great background and could have been a high profile OC somewhere. He chose a much harder path as a head coach AND AD at LA Tech.
He is highly respected by his piers.

When the F are we going to announce Dooley (or whoever) as our coach???? We have 6 big-time recruits arriving in Knoxville tonight for a weekend visit...Am I the only one that thinks it's important to have a Head Coach BEFORE they arrive for their visits???

I think they have to interview Kippy first (well I really feel they should). Kippy deserves an interview I think.

Lets back this guy. Kiffin put us in a terrible spot. That's not Dooley's fault. He is not my first choice or second, even fifth, but. . .

He wanted the job and is excited about it. If he sincerely wants to be here--and he's apparently the only one who did--then I am with him. Let's hope he does a great job for us and Lane and the rest crash and burn in Hell/LA.

If Nick Saban had him as the RC at LSU I would say this guy can get some of these recruits back. They had 2 #1 classes while he was at LSU.

Do yall know if he has any recruiting ties in the south florida area?

Dooley should have some ties to S FL...he went to the Miami Dolphins when Nick Satan left LSU...should have some ties to the State of Georgia because of his father Vince...IMO, good hire, stops the bleeding...Go VOLS! BTW, Kiffen still S_cks!

The guy seems solid. Looking forward to seeing what he can do. Also, I feel like we will not be humiliated because CDD wants to see his name in the headlines. Welcome aboard Coach.

I live here in HELL,(Bama), and the reaction from those around here are pissed that we are not going to be the laughing stock anymore. That we have made a serious hire that is being compared to Saban, Tressel, Peterson, etc. They are thought we were going to get the AF coach and they said that would have been better because he could not recruit like Dooley. They said that he will recruit as hard if not harder than coach O, so we are in good shape.

My friend at Arkansas said he has known him for a long time and we hit gold by getting him. He said the player will rally around him and that if he gets the right staff, look out.

I disagree with Larry on this one, we are going to finish with a top 10 in recruiting and I feel like we are going to be fine.

I have also heard that Kippy is staying, Lance is staying, Craig is staying and IF he gets Gunter Brewer, we are going to be hard to stop on the offensive side of the ball...

Finally, HE WANTS TO BE HERE AND TO BE A VOL!!! THESE KIDS ARE GOING TO GO TO WAR FOR HIM!!!

I highjacked this from vq... but it is a good perspective for the Dooley haters...

I love what he said, he could have stayed under Saban's wing and came out looking like a far better candidate but by him branching out on his own he is now better prepared.

I have a buddy in Louisiana that said he's solid. People there are pretty upset that's he's leaving. He's a great recruiter and had a great recruiting class despite an unimpressive record. He said he came close to beating Boise State and LSU this past year.

I've been reading up on him and I'm really starting to like what I've seen.

The first thing he needs to do is get on Ambles.

While I'm not really wanting to argue with this, I live in bammer, and I have heard none of the OP's referenced comments on any of the talk radio around here. No one has come out and called it a bad hire per se, but I have not heard the comparisons to Saban, Tressel, or Petersen.

All that being said, it looks like we got another good recruiter. Hopefully we will salvage a decent class. I just hope he is smart enough to key in on big uglies from here on out this year.
