Developmental League To Challenge NCAA?

College basketball isn't the same once they let kids go straight to the pros. You can debate whether it's in the best interest of the kids all day long. I won't take a side on that. Just saying, it can do the same to college football.

$50,000 is hardly enough to live off on the west coast. The kids would still be better off going to school. The boarding and food alone are worth that, not to mention the degree.

The article makes a compelling argument for the academic nonqualifiers, though.

there will be no fans in the stands -- see WFL - USFL- XFL all the others that failed

Don't know about the WFL, but the other 2 didn't fail because of lack of fans in the stands. They failed because of stupid decisions by the owners.

The USFL was doing fine as a spring league and then a certain owner that will remain nameless strong armed the league to move to the fall to compete head to head with the NFL, and that killed the league.

The XFL was set to return for a second season, and McMahon pulled the plug for ego. He didn't like that NBC declined to pick up the Saturday Night game, even though they were going to still televise Saturday and/or Sunday afternoon games, and they still had TV contracts with UPN and TNN (now Spike TV).

I doubt it works out financially.

ESPN and most broadcasters are already reeling from lost customers so I doubt they take a big chance on something new when they already have contracts with the competition (NCAA). without big time viewership where is the money coming from? and I doubt it hurts the college game too much. Most college fans are fans of the colleges not the players. How many fans did UT pick up from Bama when Kamara came here? How many people in mid tennessee became a UT fan because of Barnett. Bama picked up their bandwagon because they win. same thing will still be in place even if the superstars all leave for the developmental league.

and if $50,000 is what they are paying we know Bama and other big time schools pay more than that already.

Why would any of us want that?

Exactly!!! Doing something like this will make the NFL like the NBA, too many players who have relied on athletic ability and shown tons of potential but never developed the necessary skills to take their game to a new level. For every Lebron there's a Jonathon Bender or Anthony Bennett. The NFL is the most popular sport in America for a reason, the players develop in college, they get stronger and faster and learn how to be successful. The NBA is hurting it's brand by letting kids leave earlier than they should

Like most said this is overdue and will fill a void. I'm not a fan of the spread offenses in cfb, not much of development for QB's. With the parties involved this will get the attention of many.

Because there's a reason they're called student athletes instead of athlete students.

This is not about student athletes. More like athletes. Sounds like they will have the NFL's backing to start their semi-pro league. This is not college so student athletes will still be student athletes.
