My mom had a ring with a $2000+ diamond repaired at a local jewelry store back in December and she has now discovered that the diamond was switched with a cubic zirconia. What is even more upsetting is that it had belonged to my grandmother who passed away many years ago.

Does anyone have any experience with a situation like this and is there any course of action that can be taken? I would love to assist my mom so any help would be appreciated.

If it's a legit jewelry store they more than likely have a record of your visit. I would confront them first.

small claims court is about the only choice - the jeweler likely switched it - an honest one would have said even before the repair that its cubic z.

You can/should have your diamonds micro engraved with a Lazer. Not pricey, doesn't damage the stone, but is an irrefutable record of what you have.

Is there any paperwork showing the carat of the original stone? Or, any other paperwork regarding the ring? This switching of stones is not that uncommon. I would definitely confront the jewelry store owner about this. He may not be aware of what some of his employees are doing.

Local as in like a kiosk in the mall or a reputable jeweler?

Was it a certified diamond? What was the cut (round, princess, etc)? What was the color, cut, clarity, and carat weight? Did they test it upon receiving the ring prior to working on it?

have ya'll decided what your going to do ? keep us informed,we are a nosy bunch :)

We made a police report and a detective told us that they are convinced that they are lying and preying on older people but there was nothing we could do. I went in separately and spoke to the owner to see if I could get anywhere but it was hopeless. As I was leaving he said, don't tell people that we switched the diamond because God would punish me. Also he said he would rather go out of business before he would replace the diamond.

You should help him out with that.

post the name and address of the shady crook - Also the cops could at least set up a sting based on what you heard the crook told you, plus their opinion of the scam
