Did Josh Heupel just impersonate an early season Phil Fulmer?

People can say what they want to say about Fulmer, but he was a hell of a coach in the 90's. One thing I vividly remember him doing was not opening up his playbook before our SEC opener. It would frustrate me to see this Corvette running on four cylinders, but I'm wondering if we just witnessed the same last night. The play calling was repetitive and vanilla. All but two or three pass plays went from the same formation with Joe throwing to the sidelines to stacked receivers. There were no shots taken down the field. In all honesty, the shovel pass play was the only wrinkle put on film. I would be very surprised if this anemic offensive showing was due to the playbook never getting past page two.

Now to address Joe Milton. Most folks are ready to send him out to pasture; however, he was actually 21/33 228 yds 2 tds 0 int with a rushing TD. How many drops were there? Did the refs do a good job? I think if you take a step back and look at the big picture, we are in great shape moving forward. Joe's 228 through the air were matched with 228 on the ground, and I believe our little orange Corvette had the valet key in it all night.

How many passes did Joe throw that wasn't a screen that was a good throw?

Saban won with a so-so QB and great WRs blocking on screens (didn't happen either). So with a great run game they can still have a decent year with Joe.

But it feels like the guy panics the moment there's a 3 n out or the other team scores. He never was even given a chance to get it back. They just tried to get out of the stadium.

The Fulmer analogy may be apt. We obviously only saw a portion of the playbook last night.

My only concern is how often did we blow the Corvette’s engine or put it into a tree in that first SEC game (usually Florida)? We were almost always plagued by poor execution and/or turnovers in those games (lack of running the plays at “game speed against live opponents”?).

This is why coaches get the big bucks. I trust CJH knows what he’s doing. The proof will be in the next 5 games. Take care of business and no one will care about how we looked last night.

Weird that people bring up Miltons misleading passing stats. How many passes traveled beyond the line of scrimmage? The dropped passes were because of Milton. You trying running full speed and reaching behind you while a no touch fast ball is within reach. The guy lost QB1 twice already. The writing is on the wall. I hope that freshman is ready, he's going to be needed.

I wouldn't give up on Joe just yet. This wasn't a great performance for sure, but they won, so on to next week and the Gators. The whole team needs to play better next week if they want to win, so I'm not going to put it all on Joe (even though the quarterback always gets the praise or blame). I, for one, believe he will play better next week. GBO

No.
Look at Heupel’s post game presser.
He looked frustrated and worried to me.
They came out trying to run their offense at home against a weak opponent and couldn’t do it.
He knows they have a QB problem and there isn’t a solution until Nico is ready
They didn't attempt one throw deep. We called about 6 plays all game. Milton wasn't great but that was nowhere near the playbook lol. They didn't just throw out the whole offense and install nothing but screens and runs up the middle. Milton had about 3 bad throws last week and had 2 Touchdown passes not caught

Name one great performance you can really say he's ever had. I can only remember one. In 6 years.

We are still in sort of a preseason like wait and see discussion until Florida. We will know all we need to after that game. Everyone on the team knows the stakes and they know it will end all speculation and debate. They either win or they lose. And the season will then unfold accordingly.
It’s exam time.

He did seem pretty frustrated with the god awful officiating… I’m not sure it’s that dire of a situation though 😂 let’s calm down and watch next Saturday.. then we can panic lol

There were two plays designed to go long. Milton was sacked on the first one and the second one he went to Bru on a slant. Imo, Heup doesn’t have confidence in Joe and/or the O line as this offense struggles when it gets 2nd and/or 3rd and long.

I was at the game and Joe stared down his receivers rt from the snap. I’m still not sold on his footwork but then again, I’m just a fan and not a coach.

I hope they did not do any of what you said. Imagine going into Swamp with 0 deep ball practiced in game. That would be crazy crazy coaching.
I think the in game rhythm is missing between QB & WRs. After early passes, Huepel likely decided to not make Milton throw more & kill his confidence. He has another week to fix it and get it in Clemson game type rhythm.

Honest question. If a receiver gets two hands on the ball (low or high or behind them) do you feel that it should still be caught?

I expect the receiver to catch the ball if it’s between his shoulders and hips, and right at him or ahead of him.

Other than that it is a great catch.

Yeah, just before the season started I went back and watched extended highlights from all the big wins last season, and it amazed me at all the different effective plays that Heup has down inside the ten yard line. We have yet to see the play book opened all the way.

This game with AP wasn't pretty. But I think anybody on the team that saw UF vs. Utah and thought, we got this, is now a little humbled. There was bad sloppy play all day long. They have MUCH film to grade these guys on, and going down to the swamp thinking you are going to blow them out, could have backfired. This was a good opponent for this stage of the season. Some quality play from the Governors and by golly, I liked the energy that coach of theirs brought. A valuable "scrimmage" game really, and much to leverage off of. Bottom line, Florida would have beaten us yesterday. It should be a wakeup call.

Bingo. Good coaches put their team in positions where they have the best chances to succeed.

Looking at CJH’s history reveals that his nature on offense is to attack attack attack. He’s dialing it back for a reason…he doesn’t think his team is capable of executing more demanding plays at a high rate of success right now.

I don't believe it's that simple with this Board. If UT beats UF, the mob will say we just beat a terrible UF team with a terrible coach. If we lose, they'll be happy and have their pitchforks out.
and then Fahr Coach H will start, it's part of their job :Dand how they roll.

I've come to accept the fact that some people find comfort in being miserable; I don't understand it, but I accept it.

There were multiple nut jobs screaming for a new punter yesterday, before they have even seen his intangibles - which is why the coaches love him.

I still believe 95% of the pitchfork gang has never played the game, let alone coach.
