Did we waste a scholarship on Daniel Lincoln?

he is a freshman. give him some time i guess.

i remember nugent at osu had a horrible freshman year, and they didn't bench him, and he made 23 straight the year after and had clutch seasons after that.

its early, but last years recruiting class hasn't had a lot of good surprises.

Kickers are just a different breed of ball player, give him time to get his head right.

I will reference Alexis Cerna at Oregon State. He went from missing multiple extra points to lose a game at LSU to becoming among the top 5 kickers in the nation. I would give the young man the benefit of the doubt for now.

That is a dumb comment. He is a true freshman kicker. He was also kicking touchbacks and 50+ yard FGs in HS. He will come around but this isn't the year that we are relying on him anyways.

What's a dumb comment? Wilhoit, Hall, and Becksvoort were true freshman kickers.

Yeah, that is 3. Not every kicker comes in and has to play as a true freshman, nor will everyone of them be ready as a true freshman. To expect that from every kicker is dumb. Even though most people think it is just kicking, that is far from the truth. There are many intricacies to kicking a football, especially soccer style.

I didn't say every kicker has to come in and play as a true freshman. I didn't say they had to be ready, even though you would expect them to if they were kicking 50 yard fg's and averaging over 40 yards a punt in HS and now that they're in college miss 60% of the fg's from 30 yards or less.

Just because we have Wilhoit doesn't mean the kid doesn't need to be ready. How many kickers for UT can you name that didn't start as a freshman over the last 10 years? The one's that didn't start were that one's that got beat out.

You didn't say any of that but you did ask if it was a wasted scholly just because the guy doesn't have all the technique down as a true freshman, which is ludicrous.

Lincoln is built like a linebacker, I'm sure we can find a place for him somewhere if the kicking doesn't work out.

I don't think so either, but out of all the things to worry about right now, the freshman kicker as the very bottom of my list.

This points to a bigger issue. Last year's recruiting class hasn't brought in a lot of impact players. Everyone was defending all the 3 star prospects, but not many of them have pushed anyone for playing time.

Usually there are 3-4 true freshmen in every class who make an immediate push for playing time and provide a lot of depth. Outside of McClendon and Hancock that hasn't happen.

A lot of them haven't even qualified to practice. Is the rest of the SEC having this problem with the NCAA clearing house?

I read in the Chattanooga paper this morning that you can add Davis and Thompson to the group that are pushing for time at LB and will definately be on special teams. The kid from Oklahoma, Chase something, will also be playing special teams and is very smart and has been able to learn the defense quickly so he too may be in the mix before the year is over.
