I know people have been talking about how Rivals is handing out less 4*-5* this year compared to years in the past so I decided to go back & do some research on it. I know LV had the numbers a few months back so I broke it down by position. & yes I understand that more could be handed out with All-Star games & Senior Film to be evaluated but this is how things stand as of right now.

I can see a scenario over the next 4-5 years where the numbers of 4* & 5* start to decline each year players continue to not live up to their potential or have more off the field issues. These recruiting organizations have to start looking at their reputation at some point and right now there are a lot of people that dont have much faith in their evaluation methodology. jmho

Excellent point, the 5th * should be for a game breaker that is also most possibly going to be the face of your media guide, not your local arrest report.

It seems to me that Rivals was begun as someone's passion. Quality was the most important thing. But then they cashed out by selling to Yahoo. Yahoo wants to optimize profit. That means striking the equillibrium between the lowest acceptable quality (costs) and the maximum business flow (revenue).

If they give fewer 4-5* ratings then I can see a couple of possibilities. One, they are hedging their bets to avoid a low success rate. They never say 3* guys won't be stars... they do suggest that 4-5* guys will. Two, they are sacrificing quality for costs in labor, travel expenses, et al.

Here are the total numbers including JUCO and Prep rankings:

5*
'09: 35
'10: 27
'11: 16

4*
'09: 401
'10: 396
'11: 310

Rivals strongly hinted on their last update that they expected alot of bumps at the next update in mid-to-late January...

They said they'll be scouting as many all star games and watching as much senior film as possible between now and then

It's hard to make a true comparison because we don't know what the numbers were at Rivals in '09 and '10 at this exact time of the year...

If I were a betting man I'd say the numbers will be lower but not as substantially as some are thinking....I'd guess somewhere in the 20-25 range for 5*'s and 340-360 for 4*'s...which if you do the math comes out to about 10-15% less for both compared to the last two years

Yep the Rivals' line is they are being more selective but I think the truth is the competition has stole some of their best people.
