From Basilio blog this AM...the whole grain/salt thing applies. :)

The Tony Basilio Show

I'm hearing Larry Simcox's name pretty prominently for the assistant baseball job. Nothing is done on this front from multiple sources but from my perspective, this would be interesting as like Dave Serrano, Simcox would be doing another tour of duty with the Vol Baseball program. This potential development makes sense on its face simply do to proximity. Where are you going to get someone as qualified as Simcox out of your own backyard. He's a renowned hitting coach and an upbeat presence while living right here in Knoxville. Truth is there just no way Tennessee is going to woo someone of his caliber to uproot a family on a one year lark. Tennessee should feel blessed if they're able to land Simcox whose son AJ is on the current UT roster. If this happens, it would be positive short term development with perhaps long term ramifications.

I hate dismissing anyone who plays however if properly warranted, good riddance. Wish them the best and hopefully a learning lesson for all ......

As I've said all along, 2 or 3 will go. Stew and AJ are definitely gone IMO. Nice move by the senior, shows the team is still together and wanting more........

Good luck guys, now you've given 66 more work to do.....

and regarding Pop Simcox, I think it would work well for everyone if he's interested......deep down I hope he misses the game day action!

I can't figure out how to listen.

What were the intersting parts??

Regarding Bergeron...He's being very aggressive in trying to secure a position as a HC. It was a tough parting for both of us.

On finding the replacement...The reality is I'm in the last year of a five year contract but the job is still intriguing. Looking for someone familiar with the SEC, knows the region, with ties to coaches and someone with an offensive background.

Time frame...around the time of the draft.

On changes he'd like to make offensively...I would like to open it up, be more aggressive early in the game swinging the bats...we will still bunt, but maybe not as early in the game. I will have more of a say in the offense, I won't run the offense, that's not may strength but I will have more say. The person that runs the offense will be in the dugout, not the 3B box.

Reason for change...On the west coast the kids were familiar with style played at UCI and CSF, so it was easier to recruit those guys into the system. In this region kids don't play that style as much so there's more of a learning curve when they come in. I'm going to try to adjust to what the SEC has done, the teams that are successful, and put a little of our flavor into it too.

On the juniors...Had meetings with all the players last week and it's very encouraging that there is a high percentage, and I mean a very high percentage of juniors that are pretty much committing to coming back for their senior year. Now, I know the draft is next Monday and some things could change, but for the most part, as we've talked about their futures, many of them are on board and planning to come back, and that's a big coup for us.

One of the players said I appreciate you renewing my scholarship, but I just want to tell you that if there is a player out there who will make us better, or somebody on the team needs money, take my money away from me my senior year and go give it to somebody that will make us better.

On the signees and the draft...We kind of know where some of them stand, what the figures are, now whether they stay strong to that... we don't know.

I don't want to predict anything, but it's a safe bet that Betts and Hayes are going to go, gonna be hard for us to keep those guys. But the rest of the guys, we think we have an opportunity to keep and we will do our due diligence to keep them in the fold.

(He's on the road recruiting today and will try to set up some home visits with the signees.)

On the dismissed players...Plunkett is going to Wallace St. CC in Alabama. The plan for Houser is for him to go professional, if that doesn't work out, he'll transfer, Maggio is looking for a new home to play ball next year and CDS said he will help them find spots if necessary.

solid recap......thanks.

Being from Georgia, Maggio probably will end up at Kennesaw State, which is a fantastic program for a mid-major. Just a guess........

they should just sign minor league deals if they are going to keep playing baseball

Would love to see just betts and Hayes go pro. If that's the case great class and could turn the program around but the way the luck has gone around this program the last year 4-5 signees go pro and 3-4 juniors go pro. Then people that don't warn this baseball program to suceed get their wish and we are looking for a new coach next year. I'm really hoping for good news and the wait until August is gonna be a long one.

Signing deadline is July now.

We won't have any more freshmen come in for summer school, spend the whole summer on campus, go home, and then sign at the deadline like Romano did a few years ago.

and you have to be "wanted" to play at the next level.......

Less than ten in 100, or about 9.4 percent, of NCAA male baseball players will get drafted by a Major League Baseball (MLB) team.

Then 93% of players who sign a professional contract never spend one day in the major leagues.

And making $30k. Guy from my HS finally hung it up in his early 30's to come home and run the local farm supply store after spending 10 years piddling around in A and AA ball.
