Disclaimer: I am an airline pilot, and I do not know a whole lot about the intricacies about basketball.
So here goes:
With .5 seconds left in regulation, and the Brevard Community College Titans (#6 in the state)trailing the Indian River Pioneers (#8 in the state) by 3 points, BCC was inbounding the ball to the left of their basket about 1/4 court. The pass was flawless to a wide open #32 D'Montre Edwards across the court, just outside the 3 point arc. 1 bounce of the ball and it was on it's way...... but short. The crowd of 150 went quiet except for the 40 or so Indian River fans.... OK.. I'm not Hyams. (maybe that is a good thing??)
'Tre as he was called, appears to be the defacto leader of the Titans, and this was very evident as he was continually moving other players around on the court, so I think his basketball IQ is pretty good. He obviously had the green light to shoot whenever he felt he had a good shot, and in the first half he took 7 shots outside the arc, hitting 2 of them. He tended to defensively play what I think is the high post? (My basketball IQ is NOT so good) He was at the top of the key mostly on defense, but sometimes rotated down to the side . Usually to the right of the basket. I don't know if this has anything to do with how he shoots or handles the ball, but he rarely went to the other side. It could be that he doesn't have to change sides of the court when he runs down to offense. Probably not that important though.. Back to shooting: In the first half he was 2 for 10, 6 points and 2 rebounds. In the second half he played more under the basket and had 2 rebounds. Shot the ball 12 times in the second half (3 outside the arc) and scored 8 points including 1 FT. Many of his shots in this half were inside the paint.
Totals: 5 for 22, 14 pts (3 3 pointers and 1 FT)
4 rebounds
The only real thing that jumped out at me was his shooting technique. On his jumpshots, he seemed to always fall away which takes him out of the play as far as getting any kind of rebound. Other than that, I think he will contribute in Knoxville, but I don't think he is going to be another Lofton. After the game, I went down and grabbed his hand and got a chest bump and told him he is gonna love Thompson Boling. He smiled and just said "Yes sir"..
As a side note, BCC has a freshman Gary Gaskins that reeeealy looked good. The kid must have a 36" vertical leap, and is tall. Good rebounder, and had a bunch of dunks. He might be a good pickup for some team.. I realize that one game does not a resume make, but on this evening, I found myself watching him as much as 'Tre...
