USA Today reported in March that federal workers earn substantially higher wages than private sector employees who work the same types of jobs.

White House budget chief Peter Orszag responded that these pay differences merely reflect the superior skills of federal workers, not government largess.

The federal wage premium for workers who have the same education and experience stands at 24%, still a windfall for public employees.

If the overall generosity of federal benefits matches that of federal salaries (which seems quite likely), total compensation for federal workers may easily exceed $14,000 per year more than an otherwise similar private employee.

If that's true, then men should still be paid more than women for the same work. Maybe IQ different colors of people to judge pay.

I mean, if we're just going to make stuff up, let's go all the way. Prejudice, racism, sexism etc much have been right all along.

If the WH is going to shove that gem down our throats, surely they won't have any problem with bigots paying their white men more.

(Sarcasm just in case anyone here is daft enough to miss it)

the postal service is a nice example of the outsized pay being worth every penny and proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's about talent.

i was thinking of changing it to the post office since the dmv isn't a federal agency.

The Post Office makes me doubt the Federal Government all together. If they can't make money moving paper around, how in the hell can the competently run health care?

I don't disagree with the premise of the complaint you are making, but I do wonder how you compare public and private sector jobs for things like working at the DMV (which, incidentally, seems like basically working in Hell to me).

you think there aren't paper pushing bureaucratic style jobs in the private sector? how is working at the DMV any different than say working as a tellar at bank of america?

I worked as a bank teller before I got my wonderful government job (military). I also worked at Pizza Hut, but the bank teller position is and was by far the easiest job I ever had. I would bet that DMV folk do more, I mean they have to. It's the attitude of those folks that just drives me insane. I will end by saying that I have no idea how much those people make though.

And no, I am not defending DMV workers. I hate them with a passion.

Have you been to the DMV lately? I had to go over there because I let my license lapse. Now, you have to show up with a birth ceritifcate and a couple of utility bills to get it re-upped. The por schlub working that endless line of people, trying to explain it over and over and over again .... I wouldn't want that job.

We had a girl work at our accounting firm one busy season as an intern who was about as incompetent individual that I have ever come across. (I still do not know why she was hired to begin with.)

We did not offer her full time after graduation nor was she able to get a job with a Big 4, regional, or local firm. Essentially no one wanted her.

Low and behold as a last resort she got a job with the FBI I believe in their fraud division. Through the grapevine I have learned that she will be making approximately DOUBLE what any of her classmates will start off making.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is the high quality individual the fed govt employees that is smarter than I.

"Now, there's a good boy."

having to deal with people who aren't smart enough to write a check and put it into and envelope would make anyone cranky :whistling:

And just because you don't want the job doesn't mean it's skilled labor worthy of a big paycheck

No doubt. And no doubt they deserve it. Also bet those hired weren't rejected by every public firm they applied to either for double pay.

ha ha no. if anything they are taking a pay cut. of course they are working 30% less hours and get a lifetime pension so it depends what your definition of 'pay cut' is.

There are many days where I wonder if the hours are worth what I make or not.

Gov't benefits uber good. Wouldn't mind me some of that gubmint cheese.

it's available to you. Knock yourself out. I think you'd find yourself perfectly aligned with many of the Joe Sixers with who you proclaim telepathic bedroom relations.

In my field the experience has been getting a government job is about who you know, not what you know. I am reminded of this every time I go to a meeting with my government counterparts. You have no idea the frustration I feel trying to please somebody who has no ability whatsoever to understand what I am doing.

my brother in law got a plush job with a govt agency. despite the fact they already offered him the job they were forced to list the job on the website, have people take the test (including my brother in law. he said about 200 people showed up) and they had to interview 20 people. i feel sorry for the poor bastards who though they had a chance. ridiculous.
